I think you are right in your translation. McCain, though, has apparently been unaware of the honorable way Palin has acted toward him. His heart is darkened to believe that she *might* turn on him, because he would do so to her (actually *did* through his surrogates.)

I agree with that. Had McCain been a leader, he would have had control of his own campaign, instead of the party henchmen. McCain was not the top choice of voters; neither was Romney.
Just as important to remember, these Romney snakes are still out there, year after year, infesting other campaigns. Romney himself came back out of obscurity this year to agitate against the will of the voters. Snakes.
