How Ted Cruz Got Indiana Wrong
Politico ^ | May 03, 2016 | Adam Wren

Posted on 05/03/2016 6:26:27 AM PDT by 20yearsofinternet

On a sunny day at the Oasis Diner in Plainfield, Indiana, roughly 20 miles west of Indianapolis, Ted Cruz breezed through a 1950s-era diner with a gleaming steel facade. One of the last diners of its kind, the Oasis sits along the Historic National Road, the iconic highway traversing the state that fancies itself the Crossroads of America. Here, four days before he named Carly Fiorina as his vice presidential pick, Cruz met a crowd of a few hundred supporters. He mugged for photos, noshed on a fried pickle offered to him by a customer, then shot straight behind the counter. Pleasantries aside, it was time to get down to the business at hand.

“Alright, can I get anyone some fill-ups?” he asked to no one in particular, grabbing a pot of coffee and holding it up, as a peal of laughter pierced the humid air inside the packed diner. “Refill of coffee for anyone?”

Everything seemed to be going well for Cruz, who gripped and grinned amid his biggest fans, wearing copious amounts of camouflage and Dale Earnhardt No. 88 hats and “Don’t Tread On Me” T-shirts. As he spoke from the back of a red Chevrolet pickup truck, one could even hear a few “Amens.”

But then it happened.

Outside the diner, in a gaggle with reporters, Cruz unloaded on North Carolina’s transgender bathroom law. “There is no greater evil than predators, and if the law says that any man, if he chooses can enter a women’s restroom, a little girl’s restroom and stay there and he cannot be removed because he simply says at that moment he feels like a woman, you’re opening the door for predators,” Cruz told reporters.

I was not so sure he was hard line on securing the border or deporting illegals to begin with, but when he would not come out and say what he would do, I was done considering him.

I live where the border security is a big deal, and it should be a big deal to everyone in this country. If we don’t have a secure border we really don’t have a country. We can make our country safer by deporting illegals. We can also save so much money and free up so many jobs if we deport illegals.

Carly cost Cruz California. We hate her with heat of a thousand suns. Ted just isn’t very smart when it comes to politics.

So opposing transgender restroom rights derailed Ted in Indiana? Does anyone actually believe that?

Good Lord, no. That's a Politico reporter looking through a culture lens. It was never much of an issue at all until the culture warriors used it to stir up trouble, which was not an issue of social justice but one of hatred and political activism against those of us with the temerity to be normal. Ted may have outraged a few trendy liberals who weren't going to vote for him anyway, but that's about it.

Keeping illegal aliens criminals away from our children is a far bigger issue.

I think the answer is much simpler. Once Cruz was mathematically eliminated his support tanked. Nobody really wants to vote for a spoiler.

I was a Cruz supporter most of the way and I turned on exactly what you say. Scorching the earth and being purposely divisive are not going to help the Republican Party beat Hillary.

When your house is on fire, you don’t focus on the stopped up toilet.

Precisely. The United States faces an existential threat from uncontrolled illegal immigration because demographics is destiny, a lesson Europe is learning to its enduring sorrow. Unless we address that, along with trade and the rise of radical Islam, nothing else matters. So we prioritize.

Ironically, once you have a secure and prosperous country of people focused on opportunity and success, you'll be amazed at how easily so many of these cultural "problems" will melt away.

I noshed on the moist pudding that had the texture of mucus. It was made with yolk and curd and I slurped up the dripping, viscous treat.

(My daughter would be strangling me right about now. lol!)

I don’t think it is the fact that he opposed it that turns people off.

It’s the way he always states his position on an issue in the context of what he claims “Donald’s” position is.

It’s obvious right away that he cares more about trying to make Trump look bad than he does about the issue itself.

So he manages to come off as a political opportunist, a tattle tale, a holier than thou preacher, and insincere - all at the same time.

If he had brought up the issue himself things may have turned out differently, but time after time he just comes off as a rat fink.

Just stating my opinion here, we did not use to refer to folks who called out liberal, semi-liberal or even a smidgen liberal positions as rat finks on Free Republic.
