A vermin infestation has overrun the kitchen of a suburban Chicago Veterans Affairs hospital and is reportedly so severe that cockroaches routinely crawl across countertops as cooks prepare meals. The insects have even found their way into patients food, employees say. The bug invasion has attracted the attention of a U.S. senator who is demanding to know how the VA is fixing the problem. Its just the latest scandal at an agency rocked by allegations of abuse, incompetence and the needless deaths of veterans who wait years for medical appointments.

Sent it to the Trump campaign.
Maybe Trump can weave it into a rally speech.
That healthy cockroaches were able to beat a blind guy to the dinner plate.
I like it.
Sent it over to Drudge.
VA Hospitals are like our public schools. It won't matter how much money you try to throw at the problem. The real problem is the government employees staffing the system, and the difficulty of firing the incompetent/corrupt ones.
Want to fix this. Have the Sinators have to eat there unannounced.
Why do the VA employees hate and disrespect our Veterans????

Long story but shows just how incompetent, uncaring, unprofessional and downright cruel VA hospitals, especially the Long Beach VA hospital, can be.
“Im not in favor of higher taxes generally, but I DONT CARE how high they would have to raise taxes in order to put our VA in proper shape. The VA hospitals should be the best in the nation, period. Whatever it takes.”
The better idea would be to move all the VA hospitals to private enterprise and just have the governmernt fund veterans healh care through government-paid health insurance that’s equal to what we give our Congressmen and Senators. The VA doesn’t exist for the benefit of the vets, but rather, like all government “enterprises,” it exists for the benefit of those who “work” there. It’s the Post Office and the DMV all rolled up in to one gigantic political turd that provides jobs to people who don’t deserve them.
I think it isn’t really the money so much as bureaucrats that simply don’t give a rats butt about anything other than what’s in it for themselves. They run the VA to their convenience with little regard for the overall comfort, or welfare of the veterans.
They wouldn’t be cloaked as they are if they had concern for the purpose of the VA. They’d be out front with their lists of needs to support the vets as the VA is designed.
What first has to be addressed is how the bureaucrats got the attitude in the first place, and progress from there.
The VA needs to begin to consider outsourcing.
Visited a friend in that hospital, a few times. Always thought it looked dingy and dirty inside. But, the care seemed very good.
We have BOTH REPUBLICAN HOUSE AND SENATE, yet NOTHING EVER CHANGES :(
VOTE TRUMP 2016!!
The government feeds minds of young people in public schools something far more deadly than cockroaches.
What government feeds the minds of kids will kill their soul!
I don’t think lack of money is really the problem. I think the VA became a place for a cushy job and seems oversight of actual work at all levels became non-existent.
They are supposed to hire veterans but an article I read last year said they are not actually hiring veterans, especially in management positions. Few in management last year had any military service.
A real shake-up needs to happen top down, layer by layer all the way to the bottom.
Their budget certainly needs to be looked at and I am all for giving them what they need to take care of our veterans, but I think we would find money is the least of the problem.
The VA must hire people who can’t qualify to work as a TSA screener.
My dad was in a VA nursing home for just a little over 2 years.
The place was pristine, modern, and the cleanliness of it put my place to shame. The meals were beautiful and abundant; and the activities were too numerous for any one person to attend.
The staff was so caring; they paid attention to nearly every detail one could imagine. When he finally passed away earlier this year, everyone around agreed that Dad took the little slice of time that “his girls” were off in order to go. It was literally about a 4 hour time span between the shifts of his favorite caregivers when he died.
We were very grateful to the care he received at this facility; it was rated one of the very best in the U.S.
The only thing is, this facility was a private contractor that was awarded a VA contract to operate the place.
There wasn’t one of these feckless gov’t employees within 100 miles of the joint.
The problems are not limited to the VA.
Its big government and all that it touches.
The EPA mineshaft gap.
Lois Lerner & company.
0bamacare anything.
The list goes on and on.
Exactly. The VA is a huge waste of money when private doctors and hospitals already exist. IT would be like a whole new system for Medicare patients. There’s just no need for it.
