Now will we grasp that the United States is not our friend, but a foreign country whose interests are often different from ours?
President Obama's blatant intervention in our internal affairs is not a sudden breach of a soppy 'special relationship'. The USA's only real special relationship is with Saudi Arabia, a 70-year old hard pact of oil, money and power, welded together with such cynicism it out to make up gasp.
Barack Obama's open desire for us to stay inside the EU is by no means the first or worst example of White House meddling here in these islands. Bill Clinton forced us to cave to the Provisional IRA in 1998 and his successor, George W. Bush, continued the policy by making us to Sinn Fein's bidding afterwards.
Washington came close to scuppering our recapture of the Falklands in 1982. And with the current state of our Armed Forces, which can nowadays do nothing without American support, I often wonder how the White House and the Pentagon would behave if Argentina once again seized Port Stanley.
If anyone thinks Hillary Clinton is a great friend of Britain, they're in for a big surprise.
But surely the Americans fought with us should to shoulder against the Kaiser and Hitler? Not exactly. The USA (quite rightly) fought for its own interest in both great wars, not for us.
When we ran out of money after the First World War, Washington seized the chance to force us to limit our Navy, and so began to overtake us as the world's major naval power. We had feared Germany would do this. It is one of the great ironies of history that the USA ended British sea power.
In the blackest months of the Second World War, just after the fall of France.....

You make a good point, but understand that Franklin Roosevelt met the King of Saudi Arabia met on a warship in early 1945 right after Yalta.
The USA is in relationship with a nation whose citizens hate our country, too. So much they have committed acts of terrorism against it and put money into terrorism and above all preached the hatred all over the world.
Saudi money is propping up our national debt right now and Saudi money is all over our economy and so on.
The Magna Carta, the notion of constitutional government, the ideals of John Locke- all British. The US wouldn’t exist without them.
Barack Obamas open desire for us to stay inside the EU is by no means the first or worst example of White House meddling here in these islands. Bill Clinton forced us to cave to the Provisional IRA in 1998 and his successor, George W. Bush, continued the policy by making us (d)o Sinn Féins bidding afterwards.Nobody made Britain do any of that. Her own Prime Ministers embraced such policies of their own will.
What demented codswallop. Get back into the restraints before you injure yourself:
He sounds rather like a raving lunatic, what?
—
He’s usually a very reasonable and intelligent man. He’s Christopher Hitchens brother. I’ve read some of his books before. Christopher was a well known and respected atheist. Peter is a defender of Christianity.
Peter’s article is an example of what Obama does to people. He makes me at times sound like a raving lunatic too.
So it’s a yes, then.
No fall of the Ottomans, no state of Israel. So that’s where you’re coming from.
Maybe the Brits could have a commemorative anniversary attack on Washington like they did in 1814, and burn down the White House again, 202 years later?
With Barky in it of course. LOL
And Saudi money is in the pockets of all of our sleazy politicians.
The British must understand that our government’s love affair with Saudi Arabia does not trickle down to the population. We despise the Saudis for obvious reasons. And, hey, it’s not like the Brits don’t do business with them. When I lived in London in the late 70s, the obnoxious and vicious Saudis were all over the place. That’s where I first learned to hate them.
You post pictures, but cannot refute the facts that without British help, modern day Saudi Arabia would not exist.
The House of Saud owes its existence to Lawrence and British actions in Paris 1919
Are you kidding? Barky would stand on Capital Hill applauding the burning!
No fall of the Ottomans; no Saudi Arabia, no 9/11 funding, no extremist mosques being built worldwide, no ISIS.
That is where I am coming from.
The Brits should pull out of the EU and UN. The US didn’t destroy thrir “empire”, they pulled dissolved it. And Ba rack Hussein Obama, an enemy of western civilization, dosen’t speak for most Americans.
PETER HITCHENS: America isn’t our special friend. It ruined our Navy, Empire and future
Oh yes. England is still speaking English aren’t they? Who was it that kept their fat out of the fire?
AMERICA!
I don’t have to agree with everything Peter Hitchens says, but I like reading his ‘truth bombs’.
We all need more of them.
There is certainly a masochistic quality to modern-day British pundits who blame America for everything they don’t approve of. Always victims. But, of course, they vote in the party that makes decisions that prove unpopular with the general population. Maybe, like us, they need to get better candidates for their various offices.
It has been speculated that if the 1920 Washington Naval Treaty hadn’t been signed, by 1930 we would have been at war.
They wasted no time before joining the bash Trump bandwagon just before it went off the tracks. They will get no sympathy from me. And they deserve no special treatment. I have no problem with what Obama said. He’ll no doubt find a way to screw that up shortly.
