They were professionals who respected each other and each other’s music. I think Haydn relished the challenge of dealing with this beloved newcomer.

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
MOZART: QUARTET IN C, K. 465, ADAGIO, ALLEGROThis is Mozart at his very naughtiest. The introduction to the first movement uses the kind of dissonance that became the standard musical language after World War I, which is why it is known as the Dissonance Quartet.
I saw the Emerson Quartet program this piece on the same program as a Shostakovich quartet in 1992 at the University of Washington, and as they began the dissonant introduction, I could see the audiences confusion as to which piece it was hearing. I got a kick out of that, but then I have a mischievous sense of humor.

Gods Enduring Word
April 23, 2016
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Matthew 24:35
At the beginning of World War II, aerial bombings flattened much of Warsaw, Poland. Cement blocks, ruptured plumbing, and shards of glass lay strewn across the great city. In the downtown area, however, most of one damaged building still stubbornly stood. It was the Polish headquarters for the British and Foreign Bible Society. Still legible on a surviving wall were these words: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away (Matt. 24:35).
Jesus made that statement to encourage His disciples when they asked Him about the end of the age (v. 3). But His words also give us courage in the midst of our embattled situation today. Standing in the rubble of our shattered dreams, we can still find confidence in Gods indestructible character, sovereignty, and promises.
The psalmist wrote: Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens (Ps. 119:89). But it is more than the word of the Lord; it is His very character. That is why the psalmist could also say, Your faithfulness continues through all generations (v. 90).
As we face devastating experiences, we can define them either in terms of despair or of hope. Because God will not abandon us to our circumstances, we can confidently choose hope. His enduring Word assures us of His unfailing love.
Thank You, Lord, for the gift of Your Word. Thank You for its truth, its timelessness, and the guidance You give us by that Word. Help us believe and trust everything You say.
We can trust Gods unchanging Word.
Psalm 119 is dedicated to the beauty of Gods laws. Through a variety of metaphors and comparisons, the law of the Lord is celebrated as being perfect and bringing life. Rather than seeing the law as something limiting and confining, the psalmist sees the law as vital to what it means to live a full and fruitful life. As believers, we can celebrate how God intends for us to live in relationship with Him and others. J.R. Hudberg

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
BEETHOVEN: QUARTET IN A, OP. 18/5, ALLEGROBeethoven was cautious enough to wait until Haydn had stopped writing string quartets before writing his own. His first six quartets digest what Haydn and Mozart had accomplished, with just a touch of the new. The first movement of this early quartet sounds like it could be used as a TV theme. That skipping first subject on the first violin is just luscious.

Well, this is an excellent way to to it! Glad you had a good time in Canada! Do they seem to appreciate chamber music more than we US heathens? :)

It's about the same, although the Seattle Chamber Music Society has been in the game decades longer than the Vancouver Recital Society.
What makes it different is that Seattle's audience is old, while the Vancouver audience has a lot of young people. I suspect the Canadian school system places a greater emphasis on classical music than the American school system. That gives the Vancouver society an edge for the future.

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
BEETHOVEN: QUARTET IN C, OP. 59/3, ALLEGRO MOLTO By the time Lou got down to writing his middle quartets, Haydn was gone, young Schubert was at the Vienna Choir Boys School, and the coast was clear. This is the finale from the third of the Opus 59 quartets, which uses a combination of fugue and sonata format to create a rousing finale. Audiences go wild at the end thanks to the amazing release Beethoven writes into the last bars; its quite a rush. Note how he drop-kicks the theme off the cliff before rushing to the end.
See you tomorrow night for more quartets.

Well, the American school systems place no importance on much that is good for kids. We have become lazy learners here!
