WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER

BEETHOVEN: QUARTET IN C, OP. 59/3, ALLEGRO MOLTO

By the time Lou got down to writing his middle quartets, Haydn was gone, young Schubert was at the Vienna Choir Boys School, and the coast was clear. This is the finale from the third of the Opus 59 quartets, which uses a combination of fugue and sonata format to create a rousing finale. Audiences go wild at the end thanks to the amazing release Beethoven writes into the last bars; it’s quite a rush. Note how he drop-kicks the theme off the cliff before rushing to the end.

See you tomorrow night for more quartets.
