BINGHAMTON, United States, April 16, 2016 (BSS/AFP) - What do a New York lawyer, a business owner who calls himself a left-leaning Republican and a construction worker who elected Barack Obama have in common? They're voting for Donald Trump.None of them live on the breadline. They share surprisingly varied opinions. Yet they are profoundly frustrated -- with the economy, with career politicians and with perceptions of declining American prestige.
The Republican frontrunner's supporters are often portrayed as undereducated, underearning whites.
But in upstate New York, where Trump calls himself "the most popular person that's ever lived," the breadth of support spotlights his enduring appeal, albeit as the Republican elites plot to bring him down. The most divisive presidential campaign in a generation hits New York on Tuesday.
"I don't think he's the Hitler everyone puts him out to be, I really truly don't and as a New Yorker I grew up with the guy," says Lloyd Knecht, 59, who owns a heating and air conditioning company that employs 30 people.
Knecht works in Binghamton, one of the fastest-shrinking towns in America and a pale imitation of an illustrious past where IBM was founded more than a century ago and where the flight simulator was invented.
The gradual departure of IBM and other manufacturing corporations, taking jobs and technology overseas, has left behind unemployment above the US average and a poverty rate higher than the state average.
Knecht worries about rising insurance and wage bills, though he believes in "some sort of national health plan." He fears the economy is becoming sluggish. He supported Obama's decriminalization of petty drug crimes.
Trump's populist message promising to bring back jobs and restore national pride with his say-it-how-it-is manner strike a deep chord...

That’s exactly what the majority of the populace of N.Y. State is going to do; in both the primary and in the general!
Oh but 70% will never vote for him.
Bwa ha ha ha ha...
If you’re angry and upset, vote for Trump.
If you think Glenn Beck is a prophet, vote for Cruz.
If you think gender is all that matters, vote for Hillary.
If you think Lenin was a genius, vote for Sanders.
Cruz should pull out if he can’t get over 89%.
Last two reasons is why tRump will win New York
I just hope they all turn out. Trump needs 50% plus in all the primaries this coming week
Cruz need to be shut out and then shut down.
I was stuck listening to Hiltery on the TV in the waiting room yesterday and she spent 20 minutes decrying how bad things are in NY and and how only she knows how to give away the free stuff. Never once did anyone even think to raise the point that the city, the county and the state is run bu democrats and they are the reason for the misery.
So it don’t matter how they vote, Trump, Cruz or even Jesus Christ won’t win a general election in NY..
I am simply befuddled by the fact that there are “conservatives” who do not recognize that the ONE & ONLY chance that we have to save this Country is to kick the status-quo to the curb.
FGS, millions of middle class Democrats have realized it and are willing to cross over to vote for Trump...and they will never, ever vote for Cruz.
While he may not be perfect, Mr. Trump obviously loves the Country and is clearly motivated by the opportunity to leave a legacy of “throwing the bums out” at all levels and fixing decades of poor policy decisions.
I have followed politics (perhaps too) closely for my entire adult life. How anyone could not support this EXTREMELY RARE opportunity to restore our Country without some sort of mayhem is beyond me. Cruz is not likeable, has clearly shown his colors by throwing in with the establishment, and would lose in a landslide. Independents & Dems would run for the hills.
I cannot imagine what would possess anyone to support him.
Soetoro and his owners going all out for chaos, what they know.
I agree with ya.
The population declines in cities in upstate NY are astounding.
Cities like Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Utica have seen their populations halved in the last fifty years.
It is getting hard for the career politicians to hide the failures of their policies. They have made promises for fifty years—and all that has happened is things get worse and worse in upstate New York.
Actually they would run to the polls, to vote against Cruz.
In New York there’s NYC and then there’s the other sane part of the state. NYC is like San Francisco is to California. Lots of nuts to be found in the big cities especially their politics. Funny how the North and South parts of many states are so different - sane or insane depending on the state.
Nominally speaking, Trump should own a plurality of the Rules Committee and of the Convention body.
However, those "Trojan Horse delegates" are bound to Trump ONLY for the requisite number of ballots. They do not have to follow his lead in any other matter. And, indeed, are likely to resist his lead when it comes to something like disqualifying delegates from Colorado -- who were selected quite legitimately.
It is foolish and wrong for anyone to assume that they would resist going in favor of Trump once the duress is removed from them.
Delegates can flip both ways. And one who is so easily flips one direction may just as easily be flipped the other.
Unless somebody in the Cruz campaign stops the hemorrhaging, by the time the convention rolls around delegates pledged to him may be looking for a way out. The stench of his behavior is not playing well with middle America. We are on to you Ted Cruz!!!
BINGO!!!
These two items need a thread.
Your analysis is spot on. Trump has yuge non pc problems. But he is our only chance.
