Mount a seat and it could largely replace wheelchairs. We spend billions on wheelchair ramps/curbs/elevators/ADA lawsuits that could be a thing of the past. First practical applications though are probably military uses.

Do you remember as a child being afraid of being in someone’s arms going up or down stairs?

I do.

No thanks.

If a four legged version could replace wheel chairs, I have no problem with it. If we’re talking about two or three steps, I probably wouldn’t mind that if it was a four legged version.

More than that? No way.

It amazes me how slow the progress is in humanoid robot development.

The balance is very good. Now the Ewoks can’t roll trees under the walkers and defeat the empire. Thanks a lot, Google.

It amazes me we keep trying for humanoid. Really the human form is not really good for most tasks (it’s not fast, it doesn’t balance well, it can’t really focus strength in any direction, and with the quantity of knee, hip and back problems we see in the population it has some fundamental wear and tear flaws), it’s only real strength is the ability to do almost everything at the same level of mediocrity. I would think the focus of the robotics world would be more purpose built to be good at certain tasks rather than a generalized not very good. And of course the balance problem seems to be what’s really holding them back, two feet just aren’t good for much.

That's a really great idea. Especially as wheel chairs, not too different from those today, were used in the 1800's; it would be great if there was a more modern replacement. Perhaps a future mobility device would even be worn like a suit of armor.

A war with China would speed that up. All the base technologies for robots exist but the costs are still too high for consumer product demand to drive this.

Part of that is because all our buildings, stairs, ladders, vehicles, and tools were designed for humans. For now a truly general purpose robot would need a close to human form.

Notice how really slow Hubo is. Balance on 2 legs is a tough nut. That’s a lot of wasted processing power that could make Hubo smarter.
