OK. So Trump looks like he might end up a few delegates short of 1237. Maybe, maybe not. If he were to offer the VP to Rubio, in exchange for his 171 delegates, he the would only need to get to 1066. He freezes out Cruz, he freezes out Kasich and rewards them for their machinations with a loss. He solidifies his vote in Florida by adding Cuban American voters and other Rubio supporters. He wins back some of the disaffected fedgov employees of NOVA that went for Rubio and improves his chances in VA. He somewhat assuages the establishment. He can also name Rubio as "immigration czar" and help his numbers with Hispanics. Rubio will be out of government next year without his Senate seat, but if he is VP he will become the President of the Senate and the deciding vote in some cases. Rubio will jump at the chance to be the VP, imho. Cruz and Kasich hung around in a cynical attempt to keep Trump from 1237, while Marco bowed out gracefully and did the honorable thing. I think this is a win, win for both men. Trump must win on the first ballot. It would be much easier with Rubio's delegates.
I would guess that the guy Trump hired to be his Convention Manager, Paul Manafort, a veteran at this sort of thing, would know all the ways to win the nomination. Hopefullt Trump can get to 1237+ and not have to worry about dealing with anyone.
To #17. Didn’t know they had a photographer at the Battle of Hastings, 1066 AD. Could have been an early relative of Matthew Brady (history lesson here for those interested as to who Matthew Brady is).
Just funning you all. I know FR readers know who Matthews is but I suspect liberal readers don’t. To them, history is whatever Bill, Hillary and Obama say it is.
There is no locking possible.
Delegates have their own minds, especially after the first ballot. But, candidates can speak their minds, and suggest who they want their support to go.
That said, if Kasich "releases" his delegates to vote Cruz, they'll almost all vote Cruz. If Kasich "releases" his delegates to vote Trump, some of them... I think... might vote Trump.
Thanks for posting. There is mucho confusion about what Rubio can and cannot do vis a vis “His” Delegates. I read the whole post looking for something sensible and didn’t see a thing until yours.
And you are right of course. Rubio has little or no control over those delegates. He gave it up once he dropped out.
1066? “Donald The Conqueror”?
If Rubio or cruz is on the ticket, I will write in a name or stay home.
I’ve been throwing that out there. Rubio could be pissed enough that he got out and the establishment is pimping Kasich to the bitter end.
IDK. Maybe Marco could help deliver Florida for the ticket.
...oh wait nevermind
You are an awesome writer. You have such a way with words. I wish I had that gift.
Rubio would have to warm to Trump’s immigration plan, and I don’t know if I see that. Also, I’m not sure Rubio would support Trump’s position on trade or foreign policy either. The one thing I did like about Rubio was that he was unapologetically pro-life. He would make more sense on the ticket than Cruz at this point because they Dems would use all the mud Trump and Cruz slung at each other in campaign ads galore. However, the attacks Rubio and Trump had against each other were more petty, school yard type stuff like appearance. I doubt Trump would pick him, though.
Here’s my suggestion. Trump picks a senior (ex-)senator or (ex-)congressmen, with the agreement that they are VP for only four years. For 2020, Trump picks a young successor — with “2020 Vision” (TM) — to hold the VP slot.
Lol! Iowa bullshet
Cruz will need so many delegates that your proposition is worth about one Iowa vote lol!
The first thing that popped into my head when I saw “1066.”
Got a good idea for you. Try reading and understanding the rules regarding delegates.
That was the first thing I thought of too.
No. In the case of Florida delegates, they are bound until 3rd ballot.
Rubberio as nothing to offer.
Interesting idea.....I was thinking Trump could do the same deal with Christie then I realized fatboy doesn’t have any delegates to give. He must have eaten them.......
I’m not a Rubio person, but it is true that at the end, Trump stated, “He’s got a good future.” There WAS an olive branch extended of sorts.
And Rubio really has an excellent exit speech, mentioned God several times, really good. I think he has issues but maybe not as many as Cruz.
Even if its a crappy bill.............
