Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump reversed course Wednesday afternoon, saying he would only seek to punish doctors who perform abortions should the practice become illegal again. The statement came hours after an excerpt of an interview was released in which Trump said women should be punished for having illegal abortions.  "If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said in the afternooon statement. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed — like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."
The statement directly contradicts comments he made earlier Wednesday, during a town hall interview airing tonight with MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

Trump isn’t a lawyer or politician and he is STILL better than all the rest of them put together. He’s done an amazing job with the public and the press having had NO EXPERIENCE with GOTCHA candidates and the press.
NO candidate has EVER gone through this much BS. Anyone who defends the tactics used against Trump is the problem in this country.

Well, if it costs him the R nominee, he’ll go 3rd party and get my vote.
Of course it was a loaded question. The truth is the chance of abortion being illegal under federal law is remote at best. If Roe v. Wade were overturned it would be a state issue most likely. Congress would have to pass a law, and whether it would criminalize the woman or just the doctor would be up to the lawmakers. So why ask Trump? Have they asked Kasich or Cruz? Have they asked Hillary or Bernie whether they would enforce such a law? No. Trump needs to learn to not answer such idiotic hypothetical gotcha questions though.
I’m surprised he was punitive in this topic as he is not exactly a raging social con.

why oh why do some people feel they HAVE to answer every question that is asked? Why don’t candidates get coached on how to address this as a “private matter for each woman and no further answer”

Yea i think he was under pressure and was following the logic of what abortion is... I don’t see his comments as a mistake...I see his comments and then walking them back as a mistake...

The better question is, "Why can't Trump see it when he's asked a "loaded" question?"
And the answer is he thought he was throwing his supporters some red meat.
