Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump reversed course Wednesday afternoon, saying he would only seek to punish doctors who perform abortions should the practice become illegal again. The statement came hours after an excerpt of an interview was released in which Trump said women should be punished for having illegal abortions. "If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said in the afternooon statement. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."
The statement directly contradicts comments he made earlier Wednesday, during a town hall interview airing tonight with MSNBC's Chris Matthews.

How many loaded questions has Hitlery been asked the past year? Zero or Zero?
I’d say zero.
Poor Trump.
His mouth has cost him the Repub nominee. I might have to start rethinking my position on Ryan or Kasich.
Cause Trump is toast.
We all knew his mouth would eventually overload his azz. And today is the day it happened.
Be fair, was asked if it was ILLEGAL should there be punishment. Shouldn't there be consequences for breaking laws? https://t.co/FcR0IReRM5— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) March 30, 2016
Truth must never be allowed to stand.
No not a hearing problem but the full context doesn't make for the salacious sound byte they are all looking for! https://t.co/RXQqB9vkY7— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) March 30, 2016
They purposely ask stupid questions when Trump is surrounded and distracted then make it read any way they want it to.
SICK of this so called press.
He is gonna get rolled in the General ... if he is nominated.
Thank you Katy you're the only one that included the question which was if it was ILLEGAL should there be punishment https://t.co/XXrGvXMHjw— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) March 30, 2016
Trump said: "if Abortion was BANNED, then there should be a punishment for women who have them."
Isn't that true of any lawbreaker?— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) March 30, 2016
It was not a loaded question. The question was simple, Trump have the right answer, and then after consulting with his handlers, walked it back.
Wow! That was unexpected!!! /sarc
And by “walk back”, you mean “completely reverse”
Oh, please. Much the same was said about Cruz’ alleged trysts. This too shall pass, probably in two days when we move on to the next media born virus on one of the candidates.
Seems the TRUTH makes people uncomfortable. I mean, they crucified Jesus for it. So be it, TRUTH ON MrTrump - we're with you!— Bill Mitchell (@mitchellvii) March 30, 2016
FULL CONTEXT: Trump told @MSNBC if Abortion was BANNED, then there should be a punishment for women who have them.— Katy Tur(@KatyTurNBC) March 30, 2016
Yeah, you’re so right since Hillary has no skeletons in her closet. /s
Get a grip.
yea as a Trump supporter, this looks bad— Seems he had not thought through the whole thing when he was answering Mathews... But seems to me he was right the first time, if you consider abortion murder then there should be punishment for the woman...
