Donald Trump is likely on the verge of losing the Republican primary, falling short of the number of delegates required to win the presidential nomination. But, as bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rulesto argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.
Whats wrong with that argument? Electing a U.S. president is not a schoolyard game, where goalposts change when bullies whine. Theres a reason a candidate has to make it to 1,237 votes to win the nomination. Each partys goal is to put forth a nominee whom the partys members, represented by their elected delegates, believe will best reflect the partys collective judgmenta determination possible only when the level of support is clear and convincing. Thats why both parties set a benchmark, the political equivalent of the tape at the finishing line of a race, sufficient to establish the partys preference. In a hundred-yard dash, a runner who beats the others but who can only manage 95 yards doesnt go home with a medal.
At the convention this summer, assuming that none of Trumps primary opponents will have reached that magic number either, the delegates will vote on who they think best represents the Republican Party until a single candidate does receive the necessary votes. It is this candidate, the one who is able actually to cross the finish line, who will win the right to become the partys nominee. That person could be Trump, but it probably wont be.

“Whats that say about Cruz, whos gotten millions fewer votes than Trump?”
It’s a valid point.
Unfortunately, it is also the argument that the RINOes will use to give us Paul Ryan or Romney.
That said, there is a lot of polling that shows Cruz is the “second choice” for a lot of Republicans. Much lower negatives, so maybe not.
Yep.
I think the “con” in the title means “contention” when read in context of the article.
Politico is simply showing its editorial bias, because, well, because they suck.
The Politico piece is psyops, apparently effective. I have not heard Donald Trump or his campaign call for a plurality rule to replace the majority rule.
But we do hear Sean Hannity urging Trump supporters to feel like victims, and on FR there are calls for violence around the convention and for harassing delegates at home, if they do not change to a plurality rule from a majority rule.
It was obviously very difficult for you when 2012 GOP Convention locked out your nutcase hero.
Contested Conventions have long been the practice and the rule from the start. The one a Contested Convention hurts is Mr. NewYorkNoValues.
Bye Bye visions of grandeur, back to stealing from little Ol Ladies through public domain.

“A contested Convention will destroy the GOP completely.”
I thought that’s what Trump supporters wanted.
Folks can argue that ‘rules are rules’ all they want, but if the party casts aside the clear winner of the nominating contest, simply because that candidate falls short of some arbitrary number of delegates, and instead, chooses a nominee more to the insiders’ liking, it’s going to backfire in spectacular fashion.
It would not surprise me if a full third of Republican voters stay home on election day, if the party does this.
I am beginning to think that Trump -in the general- will be the only candidate to hold Hillary’s corrupt feet to the fire without backing down when the GOPe comes to “discuss” things.
I didn’t see Romney follow through on Benghazi.
I DO NOT see anyone else calling Hillary a criminal as Trump has many times. I also think Trump will call out the media for its collusion with the DC cabal.
Outside his proposed policies, we may see flashes of Ronaldus Magnus in how he comports himself. Policy-wise...not so much.
Calls, claims, threats, rumors, innuendo —— it sinks deeper and deeper every day.
I look at the source first then consult my gut.
Perhaps some of the dumbest analogies and most retarded “story” I’ve read in a good long while.
CruzClowns actually believe the GOPe will hand the nomination to him, that belief is almost religious with them, I think most believe, their Teddy is Anointed.
....As bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rulesto argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.”.....
If they go with that the margin between Trump would have to be much wider....otherwise it will be a no go. And really shouldn’t be....no horse wins without crossing the finish line. A race is won by obtaining what the rules determine...not because of failure to reach the required goal.
Additionally it does look like Trump and Ryan are in their own battle on ‘who leads’ the Party....interesting to watch this. Trump did say he and Ryan would get along as long as he didn’t get in his way.
Well, at least once;

We wanted to destroy the establishment. This will result in millions of former GOP voters walking away, ending the GOP. The only ones that will remain will be the jackboot lickers.
Not even a cup of warm spit
Ain't you just a nasty, statist GOP jackboot thug? Getting ready for your Hitlery victory part, eh?
Bully? I’m sick of the word.
“drive-by America”
I don’t think drive-by means what you think it means.
Think Bloods and Crips.
