Donald Trump is likely on the verge of losing the Republican primary, falling short of the number of delegates required to win the presidential nomination. But, as bullies are wont to do, Trump is now trying desperately to change the rulesto argue that the nomination should go not to the candidate who wins 1,237 delegates but to whoever comes closest.
Whats wrong with that argument? Electing a U.S. president is not a schoolyard game, where goalposts change when bullies whine. Theres a reason a candidate has to make it to 1,237 votes to win the nomination. Each partys goal is to put forth a nominee whom the partys members, represented by their elected delegates, believe will best reflect the partys collective judgmenta determination possible only when the level of support is clear and convincing. Thats why both parties set a benchmark, the political equivalent of the tape at the finishing line of a race, sufficient to establish the partys preference. In a hundred-yard dash, a runner who beats the others but who can only manage 95 yards doesnt go home with a medal.
At the convention this summer, assuming that none of Trumps primary opponents will have reached that magic number either, the delegates will vote on who they think best represents the Republican Party until a single candidate does receive the necessary votes. It is this candidate, the one who is able actually to cross the finish line, who will win the right to become the partys nominee. That person could be Trump, but it probably wont be.

Yeh the Politico keeps dreaming. LOL!
A contested Convention will destroy the GOP completely. The GOP has done enough to destroy itself, and this will just see the whole thing collapse. If a contested Convention occurs, I’ll be writing Trump in, and won’t vote for another damned GOP candidate on this ticket, or any other the rest of my life.
The math is solid; it’s the conclusions from thence that are opinion.
Keeping up with Politico’s anti-Trump stories is about impossible anymore.
He’s going to win anyway :)
He endorsed Emperor Zero for President in 2008.
Yeah, the anti-Trump side can change the rules, but the Trump side can’t. Got it.
They can change the rules if they want. They are not carved in stone.
“A contested Convention will destroy the GOP completely.”
I think you are right if Trump is very far ahead and they try to put in a Romney or his ilk.
But if you have two candidates with a fairly strong pluralities (e.g., Trump and Cruz) and the representatives pick Cruz on the second vote, that’s pretty normal and has happened many times, in both parties.
That’s how a REPUBLIC works. And we live in a Democratic Republic, not a true Democracy.
Trump has EXTREMELY high negatives; the majority of Republicans don’t like him. So if he doesn’t pull off the 1237 (and someone is within 200 of him), he’s toast.
With you on that. The Democrats who run the Republican Party have accomplished their mission of imploding it from within. Great job Mitch! Great job Paul Ryan! Don’t think we didn’t forget you too John Boehner! And to all the fake conservatives, RINOs, and to all who have contributed to the soon to be implosion of the Republican Party the enemies of America owe you a tremendous thanks.
I’m with you, dware...
I’d first like to know exactly in what formal missive did Trump convey this “con” to convention officials? Is there a copy? Was there a response? Were the officials even assembled? Have they been assembled yet?
Secondly, why is it I see a preponderance of anti-Trump articles being promulgated and posted here as “something reasonable we’d all like to know” from the likes of Politico, New Republic, Red State, Townhall’s Trump haters, SLATE, Salon ad nauseam? Why is that?
In the end, the FWIW isn’t worth spit.
Conjecture? Hypotheses? or just Trump-hating PDOOMAs (pulled directly out of my ass)?
The Republicans have had the same rules for the convention for over 100 years. But they should change em for Trump? Of course they should, because. . . . . . TRUMP!!!
I don’t think either side is stupid enough to change the rules mid-stream.
Maybe so, though.
I wouldn’t put anything past either the RINOe or Trump.
Mickey Edwards served in Congress for 16 years and was chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee.
Can you think of any Republlican Policies that you’d be proud of?
Trump is where he is because guys like Mickey failed.
“The Republicans have had the same rules for the convention for over 100 years. But they should change em for Trump? Of course they should, because. . . . . . TRUMP!!!”
Apparently. He’s like Batman, but not actually rich or tough or a good guy.
“Trump is where he is because guys like Mickey failed.”
Concur.
They did not have the same rules for 100 years. They changed to the 8 wins thing in 2012 and you know that.
Yup.
The problem is, you know full well what they will do, and that will be to put up the most hard core, establishment jackboot licking guy they got, probably Romulan or Ryan. The moment the establishment guy is chosen is the very moment the ballot box quits working.
