In Donald Trumps Worldview, America Comes First, and Everybody Else Pays
By DAVID E. SANGER and MAGGIE HABERMANMARCH 26, 2016
Mr. Trumps views, as he explained them, fit nowhere into the recent history of the Republican Party: He is not in the internationalist camp of President George Bush, nor does he favor President George W. Bushs call to make it the United States mission to spread democracy around the world. He agreed with a suggestion that his ideas might be summed up as America First.
Not isolationist, but I am America First, he said. I like the expression. He said he was willing to reconsider traditional American alliances if partners were not willing to pay, in cash or troop commitments, for the presence of American forces around the world. We will not be ripped off anymore, he said.

Go look back at his political interviews from the 1980’s and 90’s. You can certainly fault him for contributing to both parties, and for changing his opinion on abortion and other social issues, but on the theme of “America’s getting ripped off, and it’s got to stop”, he’s been absolutely consistent from then until now.
Works for me! America first! Screw the panhandler nations!
Interesting summary from the NYT. Even more interesting, I think, are the comments on the article. Many, if not most, are favorable.
Sounds about right to me.
That works for me.

Correct. Cruz = Globalism Trump= American Sovereignty
So,...no more foreign aid????
Yes.
I’ll take two of those!
Europe is In the mess there in because then did not have to pay to defend themselves
Spent the money on welfare
The US is BROKE
Europe is BROKE
Asia has all the money along with the oil rich arabs
I am also curious.
We now have a completely unsustainable situation, where we are now nearly 20 trillion dollars in debt, we have exported half our industry or more, and all trends are to further extend the mess.
Trump is the (only) guy out there, saying the things I believe are true.
Everyone else, in both parties, is selling out our very own country.
Every one of them.
“Everyone else, in both parties, is selling out our very own country. Every one of them.”
But, they went to the right schools and are ‘intellectuals’..
The Nixon comparison is a ridiculous stretch by the reporter. Have not all great leaders and generals in history said “unpredictability” (”element of surprise”) is the first rule of success?
Common Sense is not a common virtue.
Or maybe no more foreign aid to nations that don’t carry their weight with security and anti-terrorism efforts? Most Americans probably favor aid for our true friends?
UN building should be seized and converted to a Trump tower
Kick the smelly French and Arab bums out!
That’s a powerful endorsement.
Good enough for me.
