GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Tuesday that Donald Trump was engaging in a "pre-emptive surrender" to Islamic terror by calling for a "withdrawal" from NATO on the eve of the Brussels terror attacks.
On Monday, Trump told CNN that the U.S. should greatly reduce its support of NATO.
"It's too much and frankly it's a different world than it was when we originally conceived of the idea," Trump said of the US-European security alliance.
Cruz said he found it "striking" that the terror attacks occurred on the day after his rival candidate Donald Trump called for reducing the U.S. role NATO.
"We see Brussels where NATO is headquartered as the subject of a radical Islamic terrorist attack," Cruz said in a press conference from Washington D.C.
"Donald Trump is wrong that America should withdraw from the world and abandon our allies. Donald Trump is wrong that America should retreat from Europe, retreat from NATO, hand Vladimir Putin a major victory, and while's he's at it, hand ISIS a major victory."

Cruz has turned very distasteful. Literally before the bodies were cold he started seeing if he could use it to his advantage.
I remember back when “before the body was cold” was considered uncouth, distasteful, craven.

Completely correct. America has been played for a sucker for too long. Europeans and their leaders are still caught up in World War II dreams. They still think America will pay their military bills and send millions of American youth to fight and die for them and their socialist societies as we did in the 1940s.
In the meantime the Europeans are using the money they save on military expenditures to pay for the costs associated inviting Arab/Muslim rapists and terrorists into their nations to satisfy their bizarre misguided left-wing notions of diversity and multiculturalism.

As Cruz is known to do, he makes very strong comments about Trump based upon differences in policy positions. Recently, Trump opined to the WaPo a new, less muscular position on US military support around the world; Trump has signaled that he could retreat from full support of NATO. This is quite a change from the strong-man “torture the terrorists” red-meat spouted at his rallies!
Cruz indicated in his comments that under his presidency the US will not retreat, and the terrorist massacre in Brussels highlights the necessity for America to continue playing a strong role in supporting our NATO allies...if one reads the comments, Cruz is simply making a strong contrast with Trump!
Now, FR commentary that Trump may be a fraud is nothing new! He’s changed positions so many times in recent months that it’s hard to believe anything that he says! This is not “projection”...rather this is a harsh reality!

The problem here is Cruz is showing a lack of understanding or being purposefully misleading on the role of NATO. NATO has specifically rejected involvement in the fight against ISIS. It is a cold war relic which allows Europe to get away with far less expenditures on national security which US tax payer fits the bill for. NATO should be changed to be more of an alliance of equals not an alliance that is military welfare for European and Asian socialist nations. No one is suggesting we get rid of our existing alliances but to behave as if the cold war/WWII status quo should remain is just naive and short sighted.
