SALT LAKE CITY — If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party's nominee, Utahns would vote for a Democrat for president in November for the first time in more than 50 years, according to a new Deseret News/KSL poll.
"I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope," said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, a top campaign adviser to the GOP's 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.
he poll found that may well be true. Utah voters said they would reject Trump, the GOP frontrunner, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic candidate on the general election ballot.
While Clinton was only slightly ahead of Trump — 38 percent to 36 percent — Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist, holds a substantial lead — 48 percent to 37 percent over the billionaire businessman and reality TV star among likely Utah voters.
"Wow. Wow. That's surprising," said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. "Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking."

If the leaders told Mormons how to vote. We wouldn’t have had so many democrat mayors and our current mayor who is openly gay.
Presidential polls are worthless this early. It’s funny how they often show the democrats way ahead.
It’s easy to say that Hillary would beat Trump because all democrats, and Cruz supporters, and Kasich supporters will always say Hillary will win in a poll. But eventually when it is only Hillary and Trump running and there are no other choices then the polls change.
Like former freeper Common Tator always said, the polls get more accurate as we get closer to the election just like the women get prettier at closing time.
Trump will do just fine in Utah on Tuesday.

Trump is to the left of Hillary.
Romney is an insider in utah politics, obviously. He wouldn’t have switched from Kasich to Cruz like he did if he wasn’t scared of Trump.
Unfortunately the caucus system gives a lot of power to the utah Republican Party. Cruz will most likely win Utah but Trump will get some delegates too.
Now we know why Cruz will win Utah. The state never was one of a patriotic America. A state where men can marry as many women as they want, a state that has underage marriage as a positive. A state where Romney won in 2012. Is it any wonder it would vote for Hillary. This is one of the most anti-American states in America.
Shut your big mouth. Nobody asked you. You are bitter! Nothing good comes from your bitterness that you chose a stupid candidate that the south said go away. Follow the south’s advice.

Hatch is not popular in Utah. If it wasn’t for the caucuses and him having utah establishment support, he would have been primaried last time.
I used to work for a very conservative company and very Mormon company. It was announced that Hatch was going to come take a tour and give a speech. The workers were angry enough that the plans were changed and Hatch came after closing time at 6:30pm instead and didn’t give a speech. He is a little man.
Has anybody reported Cruz’s crowd size in Utah? I know he barely filled a gym at Provo high school yesterday.
Bernie Sanders got 14,000 at a large park right next to the University of Utah.

I don’t feel embarrassed at all. At this point in time all indications are that Trump will beat Cruz and win the nomination. He is ahead, the polls have been pretty accurate in predicting that outcome and he is ahead in most polls.
That’s not Rocket Science.
But polls of Trumps performance in the General Election look terrible and they have looked terrible right from the get-go. He may be able to overcome that trend. You seem have some magic juice that’s lets you logically deduce that he will.
Me, I just look at the polls and worry that we are picking the wrong guy. I lack your confidence in Trump who currently trails Hillary in the polls by a very uncomfortable margin.
You might eventually feel a little embarrassment yourself if Trump doesn’t recover and beat Hillary. Right now, like it or not, he is trailing.
Maybe, but we haven’t even *colonized* Mars yet.
