SALT LAKE CITY If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party's nominee, Utahns would vote for a Democrat for president in November for the first time in more than 50 years, according to a new Deseret News/KSL poll.
"I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope," said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, a top campaign adviser to the GOP's 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.
he poll found that may well be true. Utah voters said they would reject Trump, the GOP frontrunner, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic candidate on the general election ballot.
While Clinton was only slightly ahead of Trump 38 percent to 36 percent Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist, holds a substantial lead 48 percent to 37 percent over the billionaire businessman and reality TV star among likely Utah voters.
"Wow. Wow. That's surprising," said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. "Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking."

Trump can lose every single delegate from Utah, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, New Mexico, and Colorado, and he would easily win the Republican nomination and still get 1,400 plus delegates from the other 16 states and territories.
It’s that magic math favored by all the liars.
I’m still laughing about Beck and his white horse crap and Cruz being anointed as some savior as we ‘hang by a thread’.
About Bishop Willard, most definitely.
The apt and eloquent quote is by Cicero. Willard can’t put together a coherent sentence about subjects as mundane as grits or trees.
Utards...piss on em. What would you expect from the State built in mormon fantasy.
Big whoop. Trump would bring NY and NJ that together outnumber Utah by 43 electors to Utah’s 6.
JediJones, by what magic does Cruz even get the nomination?
He has to get 87 percent of primaries votes here on out. No way he’ll do that.
In a brokered convention, he won’t be pickedby the GOP establishment after getting his butt kicked by Trump in the primary race.
Cruz is toast any way you look at it.
His ONLY CHANCE is to beg Trump to be part of the Trump administration.
YOU are dreaming.
“Cruz would soundly defeat Hillary, probably a similar map to Bush/Kerry.”
Steiner isn’t coming.

Well then I guess we’re lucky that Utah has less than 1% of the US population.
The tediban should keep grasping at straws. It’s about the only interesting thing they do.
If this happens.
Utah will be boycotted like Faux, Macy’s and other organizations who hate Trump and the millions of us who will vote for him.
Soros Board Member Chairs Firm Running Online Voting for Tuesdays Utah Caucuses
Even if he was a Nazi collaborator it seems that Soros learned a few things from Joe Stalin as well:
"It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything."
It is interesting that in my home county, in Pennsylvania, more people are expressing a faith in Trump over any of the other candidates left standing. My county is part of the “T” in PA, solidly Republican, and has been since the Civil War. They are furious with the GOPe for doing squat and squandering their “power”. I doubt the Utah “poll”.
Yeah and Hillary would win Texas. cmon this is garbage
Naaah. Utah is very pretty. What Utah does need, though, is an increase in it’s Catholic population. And they”re getting it, slowly but surely.
I suspect there aren’t too many states where Trump would win. Maybe Texas and Florida. But then Obama won Florida twice and its considerably more Democrat than it was 4 years ago.
So, it’s the Cruz voters supporting Hillary over Trump, for the most part.
And if Utah did vote for Hellary over Trump, a whopping SIX electoral votes would not impede his race to the WH.
There were a bunch of decruzional folks here last week saying he was gonna have a big night and win FL,OH,etc.
