Why Ted Cruz Could Win the GOP Nomination. In 2020.

[SNIP]

The argument against Cruz is that he’s obnoxious. His colleagues don’t like him,and exit polls show he doesn’t do nearly as well among moderate and somewhat conservative voters as he does among hardcore conservatives....That’s why, when my colleague Jamelle Bouie was betting on Cruz,I put my money on Rubio...I stand refuted.Cruz hasn’t overcome the Trump wave, but he has proved that in an angry party, his organization, discipline, and message can beat a broadly appealing rival.

Republicans who vote for Trump in 2016,only to see him abandoned by elements of their party and defeated in the general election, would be at least as angry in 2020.The notion that his loss would teach them not to support Cruz has two glaring flaws. One flaw is that the desertion of Trump by the GOP establishment,or at least part of it,would confound the equation.A Trump rout wouldn’t prove that Republicans are better off nominating a candidate like George W. Bush, because the right would be able to point to a difference between 2000 and 2016:the establishment’s betrayal of Trump.

The other problem is that Cruz isn’t Trump.Trump’s conservatism is visceral and stylistic....Cruz’s conservatism is ideological. He cares about tax cuts, deregulation, and social-issue litmus tests...If Trump loses the general election, they won’t conclude that their brand of conservatism has been refuted. They’ll conclude, with some justice, that their brand of conservatism hasn’t been tried.

Cruz has been making this argument for months. In speeches, debates, interviews, and ads,he has painted Trump as a donor to liberals,a socialist on health care, and a squish on Planned Parenthood. Presumably,Cruz will hammer these differences all the way to the convention. And then,if Trump loses the election,Cruz will take up where he left off. He’ll raise more money, build out his field organization, and lock up support in the Tea Party and on the religious right. He’ll tell hardline Republican audiences what they want to hear:that Trump lost because he wasn’t a “consistent conservative.”..

Trump went up 13 points, whereas Cruz went up only 1 point and Kasich went down 1 point after Rubio dropped out.

Cruz is just not an attractive candidate. The more he talks the less people like him.

How many candidates does this make that you have supported to only have them toppled by Trump? Must be very frustrating for you by now. Trump will not only win over Hillary he will trounce her and enter the White House with a mandate.

“Best path forward is to join together and unite behind Ted Cruz for 2016!”

It’s the ONLY path forward. Anything else is a step backward.

““What is Ted willing to concede to the likes of the Glenn Beck mentality,...”

That isn’t an answerable question. Glenn Beck is a moron, but he isn’t part of a Cruz administration, and won’t be.

Again, there was a second part to that question. All of us evidently realize the Glenn Beck connection is inexplicable, but nonetheless “there it is”. Why?

Neil S&L Bush and the answer to grudging support now by GOPe forces like Graham et al?

“Neil S&L Bush and the answer to grudging support now by GOPe forces like Graham et al?”

Because they have no choice. It’s Cruz or lose in a landslide.

Look. We are at an impasse and I realize you won’t face the facts but I don’t fault you for it. Realization is a real bugaboo to face. But there is no one here that can tell me Cruz can win when my Southern State of Georgia and every one of the states that surround in (even one or two over from that) have voted against him preferring Trump.

You can’t take the Kasich, Rubio and whose ever votes and automatically convert them over into some mystical incantation the gives all them to Cruz in a Trump/Cruz matchup. Nor can a media push poll that contrives scenarios with multiple candidates still on the field that unequivocally indicate Cruz is somehow the winner in all this. Coffee. Wake up and smell it.

What you wish and want is just not going to be.

What will Trump give all those liberals in exchange for their vote?

This question needs to be asked over and over again. The Trumpers are all excited because he is supposedly attracting all these liberal voters but what will he have to do to keep them in his camp? He’s already said SS and Medicare are off the table, rarely, if every, mentions our debt.

A trump nomination isn’t either, ever.

He did say he would give them Bernie’s heath plan.

Just another stealth statement that you and your compatriots will not ever support Trump as a nominated Republican candidate and will not vote ever for him, even though you won’t unequivocally say that. It is your Cruz way or the highway.

I’m done discussing this with you.

He will never get the nomination, but my opinion won’t have anything to do with it. The party will never allow Trump to have the nomination.

I already voted for Cruz in the MI primary.

You have a great day, really.

I don’t know what else to tell you but that if the GOP does steal the nomination from him going into the convention with the requisite number, there will be a catastrophic butt load of down-ticket blowback in voting. I know there won’t be one damned Republican I’ll vote for.

>> look at Cruz’s numbers in in the finished primaries of Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, and Michigan and tell me again how a guy who is running on nothing more than I’m the most far right wing guy to run for President EVER is going to be elected in a general election? <<

I love how you Trumpsters claim to loathe the "GOP establishment" more than anyone else, yet you repeat the GOP establishment's "only moderates can WIN" talking points verbatim. Quite ironic.

Perhaps that explains why so many Trump supporters in the Illinois primary voted to re-nominate our worthless uber-RINO Senator and entrenched beltway Congressman. "Destroy the establishment", my butt.

He will be in long enough to block Trump’s majority. Then - SHOCK - he will recognize the futility of his path. Eventually, he will come to be associated solely with his being a tool of the GOP bosses misdeeds and never be heard from again.

That is very true, and something that people are not thinking about. If the Democrats win this year, there will be a far smaller chance of them losing 4 years from now. The demographics are changing, and they are changing to the benefit of the Dems. Love it or hate it, that cannot be denied. We need to take all our victories NOW rather than wait for a later that may never come.
