According to a report in POLITICO, President Obama will nominate Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court as a replacement for late Justice Antonin Scalia, who died last month. Obama will make the announcement from the Rose Garden at 11 a.m. eastern.

In an email announcement sent by the White House earlier today, Obama said without naming Garland that his nominee possesses "an independent mind, unimpeachable credentials and an unquestionable mastery of law."
Before landing on Garland, at least six potentially nominees for the position asked President Obama to take their names out of consideration as Senate Republicans firmly stand their ground against holding confirmation hearings.
"We intend to exercise the constitutional power granted the Senate under Article II, Section 2 to ensure the American people are not deprived of the opportunity to engage in a full and robust debate over the type of jurist they wish to decide some of the most critical issues of our time. Not since 1932 has the Senate confirmed in a presidential election year a Supreme Court nominee to a vacancy arising in that year. And it is necessary to go even further back — to 1888 — in order to find an election year nominee who was nominated and confirmed under divided government, as we have now," Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans wrote in a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in February. "Accordingly, given the particular circumstances under which this vacancy arises, we wish to inform you of our intention to exercise our constitutional authority to withhold consent on any nominee to the Supreme Court submitted by this President to fill Justice Scalia’s vacancy. Because our decision is based on constitutional principle and born of a necessity to protect the will of the American people, this Committee will not hold hearings on any Supreme Court nominee until after our next President is sworn in on January 20, 2017."

Do liberal judges ever not vote in lockstep? Liberalism is a groupthink ideology. And it’s extremely easy to find a liberal working for the government. So we can be sure he’ll be directly in line with Ginsburg, Kagan, etc.
The Republicans would be fools to proceed on this nomination, but I repeat myself. They must refuse to hold hearings until the election is over. At that point we will know who will be the next President and the question will be is this guy the best that we can do if Clinton is POTUS. Of course, the lame ducks could sell us out after the election no matter who is elected to the Presidency. The sore losers of the GOPe will not go quietly.
Can they? Yes they can. Will they (delay) that’s the question. I think we all know the answer to that.
McConnel is already preparing his “qualified bipartisan candidate” speech now. (After he blisters something about “we will never stand for...” Blah blah probably sometime today)

But but but Mitch McConnell will be shunned at all the Washington dinner parties! Why, any Senator that doesn't bow down to Obama might not get invited to the soirees! They couldn't possibly stand being shunned socially in Washington salons!
I'm serious. That is how most Washington politicians make their decisions: whether or not it will get them shunned at dinner parties.
Trump never had to be destroyed. He has never earned a majority support among GOP voters. And even less so once you take out the crossover Democrat voters in open primaries.

If we can get Kasich to state his support, it will be an albatross around his neck when this guys anti-gun choice record becomes public.
So the burden of halting any closet -- or overt -- liberal replacement for Scalia's vacant seat belongs to the Senate, not the president.
My fearless forecast: The GOP Sinators will suddenly get a testosterone injection and hold the line through the session. Then the Dims will regain the Sinate and the new Sinators are sworn in two weeks before the inauguration, so Obama and Schumer will have two weeks of tomfoolery even if Trump wins. Obama will withdraw this 63-year-old lefty and together Obama and Schumer will install a 45-year-old outright commie in the court.
