Trump never had to be destroyed. He has never earned a majority support among GOP voters. And even less so once you take out the crossover Democrat voters in open primaries.

If Romney had stayed out of it, he would have absolutely risen in the polls.
Once there was an attack, then he’s been on defense ever since and STILL winning.
