Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said on Friday that Donald J. Trump bore responsibility for creating an environment that encourages violence at his events.
Speaking to reporters at a local Republican dinner outside Chicago, where Mr. Trump had just canceled a rally amid fierce confrontations between his supporters and protesters, Mr. Cruz began by saying that the protesters who took violence into their own hands were responsible for the episode.
But in any campaign, responsibility starts at the top, Mr. Cruz continued. And when you have a campaign that disrespects the voters, when you have a campaign that affirmatively encourages violence, when you have a campaign that is facing allegations of physical violence against members of the press, you create an environment that only encourages this sort of nasty discourse.
Mr. Cruz invoked the protests and violent police run-ins at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and predicted that future skirmishes were likely.
When the candidate urges supporters to engage in physical violence, to punch people in the face, the predictable consequence of that is that it escalates, Mr. Cruz said. And today is unlikely to be the last such instance.

I am done with Ted now.
GO TRUMP!
Remember when the media and the administration called the Tea Party “terrorists”? Pretty funny, considering the complete lack of violence - or even bad language - at our events.
Guess it’s all perspective.
Shame about Ted; used to like him.
What Cruz did last night was to put justification in violence against Donald Trump personally and your fellow conservatives. And you condone this with some phony rationalization! Would not want you for a friend...shame on you.
Tell you what. Cruz slid back when he allowed the little sleazy bastard Glenn Beck into his campaign.
What a load of horse crap.
At this point, you’re the Walking Ted.
And your candidate is FINISHED now.
My Florida vote just went from Cruz to Trump.
Screw you, Ted Cruz.
F Off Cruz. If you are nominated, we’ll lose to Hillary anyway. I will probably vote Johnson Libertarian as a protest.
I am leaning that way also. Cruz, especially, will not be getting my vote.
But Ted has done opened his mouth and spewed leftist pap about the Chicago Trump rally and sided with the nutters.
There is no way I will vote for him now.
The more I saw of Cruz the more I cringed. Having the nutter Beck on his team was a stunner. The issues with the pamphlets and stories about Carson and on and on but his pronouncement that Trump caused this well organized BLM disruption campaign is a deal breaker.
Ted is getting hammered for this on his FB page.
Big time.
So, suppressing your opposition through violence is OK when your guy does it, but bad when the opposition does it?
Okee dokee. Good luck with that!
Get your head out of your rear end.
I am sick and tired of reading FReepers trying to justify what happened last night as Trump’s fault. I know your words say differently.
You must be aware that when you say “But” at the start of the next sentence you are negating your previous comment.
This is the time for a united front from Cruz and Trump, not a time to try to take political advantage of an attack from the left. We have the media doing that job just fine.
you have described copping out.
there are but two candidates and perhaps several pretenders such as the one you mentioned
you have deluded your self into petty correctness
Sox fan. Figures.
That was a dick move Cruz
Trump has been advocating violence against his opposition, from the podium, at rallies, in front of TV cameras.
Now, Trump supporters discout this as just more loose talk and hyperbolic rhetoric from their candidate. He doesnt mean it, it is just Trump being Trump...
But dont blame people when they listen and take him at his word. At some point the Trump is just being Trump get-out-of-jail-free card has to be returned to the bottom of the pile.
No, he hasn't.
He has encouraged his supporters to fight back, and not to give in to these orchestrated disruptions by the Left and with approval from the GOP establishment.
People see what's going on in Baltimore and U of MO and they're not going to cave in to these leftist radicals.
Do you think these agitators will behave if Cruz somehow wins the nomination?
