Rubio, Cruz, Kasich All Backed Obamatrade, Pretend They Didn’t at Miami Debate
breitbart.com ^ | March 10

Posted on 03/11/2016 3:46:36 AM PST by Helicondelta

At Thursday night’s Republican debate, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), John Kasich, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) all parroted talking points about trade that do not seem to match their prior legislative records and statements on the critical issue.

While Donald Trump has articulated his vociferous opposition to President Barack Obama’s trade agenda in practically every GOP debate, tonight marked the first debate in which all of the other candidates were asked about their previous support for trade globalism.

...

Jake Tapper then asked Cruz: “You were a supporter of the Pacific trade deal [TPP], but after taking some heat from conservatives, you changed your position. Why should these voters who don’t like these trade deals trust that you will fight for them all the time and not just in election years?”

In response, Cruz said:

Actually that’s incorrect. There are two different agreements. There’s TPA and TPP. I opposed TPP and have always opposed TPP, which is what you asked about. And when it comes to trade, look, free trade, when we open up foreign markets, helps Americans. But we’re getting killed in international trade right now. And we’re getting killed because we have an administration that’s doesn’t look out for American workers and jobs are going overseas. We’re driving jobs overseas.

However, Cruz voted to fast-track the TPP by voting for TPA on the first go-around.

TPP could not have happened without TPA

FALSE - TPA is simply a up or down vote on any trade deals brought before congress, no amendments allowed. It is a good thing.

TPP has never happened

Cruz only started preaching “smart trade” or negotiated trade, since Trump has been showing how America is been screwed over by “free” trade. All last evening the 3 others, C, R and K were shouting “Me too” on everything Trump has advocated from Day One.

In 2015, total U.S. trade with foreign countries was $4.99 trillion. That was $2.23 trillion in exports and $2.76 trillion in imports of both goods and services.

If the USA was serious about eliminating the deficit then a 20% across the board import tariff would being in over $500B/yr. That would close the budget deficit lickity split. Tariffs also stop the off shoring of factories and promote repatriation of industry. Trump explained all that last night. He did a good job.

Cruz should have never voted for something he didn’t understand COMPLETELY with all potential ramifications. Saying he was lied to is not an excuse. Our President will be lied to by all our enemies and can’t like Obama go along with the lies. I don’t trust Cruz abilities in that nor in his choice of people he surrounds himself with in his campaign.

If America had reacted intelligently when association with Reverend Wright and Bill Ayers became known, we would not have had a President Obama. The same excuses are made now for Cruz and his close relationships with the Bush dynasty, Beck and the other GOPe who sold us out for 7 years.

There are two different agreements. There’s TPA and TPP. I opposed TPP and have always opposed TPP, which is what you asked about.

Its the politicians way to vote for something while later casting a meaningless vote against it. That way he can claim, as a good lawyer shifts in a technicality, that he voted against it while providing the pathway for approval.

Politics as usual ...

Incidentally, I found it hilarious that Cruz last night was spouting his opposition to the ethanol mandate ... it took a lot of courage Ted to publicly oppose it while your campaign coffer is full of money from big oil donors lol. And when he and Wolf were chatting post-debate ... he made it sound like only Trump and Rubio were behaving badly in the previous debate. What a lying self-righteous hypocrite this man is.

Cruz has lost me as my second choice in the past month.

TPA gives the US President authority to negotiate a trade deal (not impose), it then comes to the floor for a up or down vote. No amendments are allowed

In concept its a very good thing, both sides have wanted this.

Pathological LIAR Cruz (Goldman Sacs, Lawyer) VOTED
to help ObamaTRADE because it was secret and he
was PAID by Goldman Sacs, as was his wife.

Cruz is a lying betrayer.

And a past voting-supporter of ObamaTRADE.

Trade Promotion Authority , Cruz supported Fast-Track trade authority, Initially, yes.
Trump would surely want Fast-Track authority for his Trade Deals to “Make America Great” again.
But McConnell and the Dems slipped illegal immigration language and Export/Import Bank re-authorization into the bill.

Ted Cruz changed his vote to NO and then called Mitch McConnell a liar on the Senate floor to be recorded for prosperity.

So how is Cruz a snake?

_____________________________________________________________

Cruz did the right thing but they try to spin it to attack Cruz, he even called out McConnell for lying to the Senate.

Not so, Cruz doesn't use that term. Cruz has been fighting for 'Good Trade' before Trump even announce he was running.

“I am sure Cruz actually “believes” Smoot-Hawley caused the Great Depression. Does he believe in the tooth fairy too?”

Cruz is accustomed to creating “facts” to suit his argument...morality and ethics be damned. He lies, sometimes I think it is pathologically.

Did anyone notice that the 3 insiders would not take the bait about Trump supporters being violent. I was hoping Rubio would parrot the lib premise.

Why? Cruz opposes mandates on energy. He's against different forms of energy getting special treatment from Washington. What's funny about that?

Again, Ted is correct

I don’t think Trump will anything like Reed Smoot or Willis Hawley. His goal is not to reduce imports but to pressure our trading partners into better deals. That’s not protectionism, that’s just patriotism.

Cruz lost it at the end and went back to the personal campaign accusations but the Trumpster mostly ignored him

I’m used to be glad Cruz won Iowa. A kick in the teeth to Big Ethanol. It’s ultimately doomed now. But if Cruz causes discord in the convention? Then I won’t be so glad.
