Trump Vows to 'Rip Up' All Trade Agreements

Republican front-runner Donald Trump on Thursday said he would rip up all existing free trade agreements if he wins the White House.

Trump argued that he would greatly improve U.S. relationships with nations such as Mexico and China while lowering trade deficits.

"I’m going to rip up those trade deals and we’re going to make really good ones,” he said during a campaign stop in Portland, Maine.

He lashed out at 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney for saying that a Trump presidency would ruin free trade for the United States.

“Ruin free trade?” Trump said. "If I’m losing $505 billion with China, if I’m losing $58 billion a year with Mexico, in terms of deficit, why do I want that kind of trade for anyway," Trump said.

"Ruin it? Who needs that kind of trade, seriously who needs that kind of trade,” Trump said.

Earlier in the day, Romney called Trump a fraud and ripped him for his lack of policy proposals.

The trade deficit with China last year soared to $365.7 billion, well below Trump's $505 billion, and was $58.3 billion with Mexico, according to Commerce Department figures.

“We will actually have better relationships with Mexico and better relationships with China, they’ll respect us,” Trump said.

“They don’t respect us now. They think we’re the dumbest people on earth led by the world’s dumbest people," he said.

Is it legal to just rip up treaties without senate?

“And how is that going to greatly improve relations with Mexico and China?”

It will let Mexico and China worry about that. They need us more than we need them.

Patriots will need to support Trump by also electing a new, state sovereignty-respecting Congress that will support Trump in ripping up all trade agreements.

Including the FTA with Australia? The US has an annual $14-15 billion trade surplus with Australia.

Trump might want to rethink a blanket approach and instead target the ones actually causing America harm.

I have not seen a good relationship yet where one party knows they can take advantage of the other.

Probably not , but that hasn’t stopped BO ...the Senate has rendered itself useless and non-existent, so i’m not sure it even matters at this point ...

And I don't see how dictating to the other side will gain respect. If Trump says he's going to rip up the trade agreements then I'm sure he will. But they aren't going to be replaced because I can't imagine why anyone would sit down with him.

Cannot do. No constitutional authority. It’s like the rest of what he says.

So ripping up existing trade agreements with China and Mexico is going to magically improve relationships with China and Mexico?

What relationship? America was great back when we had high tariffs and we will be great again with tariffs (even though they won't be that high).

Maybe they would want to sell into our market.

Then Congress would need to step up.

I’m all for the sentiment, he just won’t have the authority to do so as President. But I hope he can get Congress to take action.

He probably will have sufficient authority. WTO agreements allow the imposition of a tariff in the face of chronic trade deficits. Not sure about NAFTA. But Trump will be able to convince Congress if he needs to.

A stinking liberal like Romney is the reason the sorry former conservative republican party has turned into a stinking liberal RINOcrat party. I quit that party way back, back when Bob Dole was “the best they could muster up as a candidate” for president. I have not gave the stinking party a dime in the 2000’s. Not one of the punks have been worth a penny of my military retirement or disability checks. Not one of them was worth spending what I bled on the ground and in that Medivac in Nam for. Dole, two shrubs or I guess I mean Bushes, stinking Romney. THESE are what we get??? These worthless nothings. The last REAL man I voted for was Ronald Reagan. Since I begin voting way back in the 1960’s, I have voted for one republican candidate in all those years, all those elections, I voted one stinking time for a real man, and President Reagan was that man. THE ONLY ONE in all those years. The others were wasted votes.
