Republican voters need only look to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to understand that GOP lawmakers will willingly sacrifice the White House in order to save their own hides.
As the Republican Party begins to accept the very real possibility that front-runner Donald Trump will be their presidential nominee, McConnell laid out a plan that would have lawmakers break with Mr. Trump explicitly in a general election, The New York Times reported.
Despite his overwhelming victories thus far, leaders of the party think Trump will lose in the general election and will hurt Republicans down-ticket.
According to The Times, resistance to Trump runs deep, and a desperate behind-the-scenes mission to save the party from the real estate tycoon stalled out. As a result, two campaigns have drafted plans to overtake Mr. Trump in a brokered convention.
The newspaper said the effort to unite warring candidates behind one failed spectacularly.
An overture from Senator Marco Rubio to Mr. Christie angered and insulted the governor. An unsubtle appeal from Mitt Romney to John Kasich, about the partys need to consolidate behind one rival to Mr. Trump, fell on deaf ears.
Kasich in particular has drawn the ire of GOP power brokers, having struggled to compete in the first four states to vote.
Hes just flailing his arms around and having a wonderful time going around the country, and it just drives me up the wall, a senior Republican senator said, according to The Times.
Several senator said McConnell was especially vocal about how Kasich was being irrational.
If Trump is the nominee, McConnell allegedly has told Senate colleagues, Well drop him like a hot rock.
And he may treat Trumps loss in the general as a given, allowing senators to distance themselves from the candidate and run negative ads against him.
While still hopeful that Mr. Rubio might prevail, Mr. McConnell has begun preparing senators for the prospect of a Trump nomination, assuring them that, if it threatened to harm them in the general election, they could run negative ads about Mr. Trump to create space between him and Republican senators seeking re-election. Mr. McConnell has raised the possibility of treating Mr. Trumps loss as a given and describing a Republican Senate to voters as a necessary check on a President Hillary Clinton, according to senators at the lunches.
All of which suggests that when it comes to political theater, the best is yet to come in the 2016 election. At the very least, its going to be an interesting spring and summer.
It happened in Virginia during the last election for the governorship; why is anyone surprised?
Trump at least has a chance but the base he is playing to is not really listening to him, they think they are getting one candidate and Trump is not really saying what they think they are voting for. They are going to feel very betrayed if he is the liberal Trump in the office.
Americans have been buying enough guns to over supply the worlds 3rd largest army each and every year of the Obama administration. Survivalist companies can not keep things in stock. What do you think they are really preparing for? The anger these candidates are ignoring(McConnell) or playing too(Trump) is dangerous. What betrayal is the final straw?
You say voting for Trump is what you describe, yet voting for anyone but him is understandably logical somehow?
Trainwrecks and roadside accidents? Bush and the TSA and DHS. McCain, Romney, Jeb - and now Rubio with whom has inexplicably linked up with to defeat the “Trump?” They’re no concern to you at all? Even though Cruz’ mistake at this alliance with Rubio will kill him off? Look at what’s happening in the polls for Cruz why don’t you?
We ALREADY have the biggest train wreck in history - its name is Barack Hussein Obama (and all those loser, quisling RINOs that helped him rape and pillage us these last 7 years)..... but that’s okay. Trump has baggage and we shouldn’t vote for him.... yeah...right.
Nothing quite so honorable. From his official military records:
"Behavior problems, required excessive supervision while on duty, little regard for regulations, apprehended masturbating in platoon area while supposed to be detail. "
Chill out. If Trump wins the nomination, the majority of all conservative and republican voters will vote for him, along with independents and quite a fair number of liberals.
I was being funny. Not possible to do these days, I guess.
Trump threw an enormous monkey wrench into their globalist, corrupt, mechanisms. We still have to get through year 8! Hold on! Go Trump! Go USA! It’s time to CLEAN HOUSE!
I’m done being funny.
Thank you. Thank God somebody gets it.
God protect Donald. We need him. He is our last chance to bring America back.
Figured as much
Thanks! Was wondering about others. Hey, the Constitution Party national website needs their contact link fixed on the home page. They also need to video and post the debates on youtube and give info on all their candidates.
One question. Very pro-life stance but was wondering about death penalty? Hard to be for it when the justice system is so corrupt, but still needed.
“Republican voters need only look to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to understand that GOP lawmakers will willingly sacrifice the White House in order to save their own hides.”
What are their ‘hides’ afraid of? I am curious as to why their hides need saving from President Trump but not from a president Marco Rubio. If Trump wins the populace I don’t see how the delegates can ignore it. Trump can’t fire senators and congress men, only their voters can. Seems like if they cooperate with Trump on issues the populace supported him on, what’s the problem? They are the ones that said they now needed the WH. They are making it sound like they don’t care what the people want and it’s all about the party.
Not a good move, that.
I did not research enough. Thanks for the correction.
Then you tell me. Or don’t you know?
Did you read this? That was only a request for discharge.

A little research goes a long way.
FUMM!!
yep GOPe is in a tough spot.
They lose either way.
They’ve been throwing up roadblocks all along, dropping him like a hot rock would actually be a respite.
McConnell is going to lose the Senate and he’s trying to blame Trump for it. Johnson is down 10 points in Wisconsin to Feingold and Kirk in IL is also a goner. Dems only need to pick up 3 more seats and it is Game Over for the Post Turtle.
I believe Trump supported McConnell. Goes to show how great the Donald’s judgment is. Cruz had McConnell figured out quite a while ago, but is reviled by many here at Free Republic for not having worked with McConnell.
Hey wait, it was Trump himself who said Cruz was wrong for not working wth McConnell. Karma is a beotch.
