Donald Trump says he cannot release his tax returns because he is undergoing an audit that goes back four or five years.
But the Internal Revenue Service usually does not look back more than three years.
Generally, the IRS can include returns filed within the last three years in an audit, the agencys website says. Additional years can be added if a substantial error is identified.
The IRS further reports, The statute of limitations limits the time allowed to assess additional tax. The statute of limitations is generally three years after a return is due or was filed, whichever is later. Either Trump is lying about undergoing such an audit as an excuse not to release his returns, or the IRS has found that his most recent return includes an error considerably bigger than a simple oversight. Whatever the truth, an audit should not preclude releasing his returns.
Meanwhile, Trump has tweeted a photo of himself with a pen and a stack of papers.
Signing a recent tax returnisnt this ridiculous? he wrote on Thursday.
In October, Trump had initially said that he would release his tax returns after Hillary Clinton released all her emails.
But I will say this, and Im very proud to say it, I think the country is run horribly. I hate what they do with our money, Trump noted at the time. And unlike everybody else, I try to pay as little tax as possible, because I hate what they do with my tax money.
He added, Its a little tax.
In January, Trump indicated that the release was imminent.
Were working on that now. I have big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and very beautiful and well be working that over in the next period of time,

This is a good issue to bring up. Remind all those conservatives who were targeted by the Obama IRS to get out and vote. Might even make them sympathetic to Trump.
used to be 7 years, now it’s 3
I’m appalled at Mitt Romney. What smarmy behavior. So sorry I voted for him.
He should know better than most the complexity of a successful businessman’s tax filings. AND how lethal innuendo can be. I can’t even think of Romney now without wanting to take a shower to get the yukk off.
SURE/s/s/s/s/s He said so, what’s not to trust in that./s
i believe he is going to let this get to a fevered pitch then release his absolutely perfect returns if trump is nothing else he is the master of media manipulation
Trump has no legal requirement to release his tax forms.
His taxes are none of your business. Taxes are the problem.
Big Government apparatchik aren’t you?
Bless your heart.
“Trump has no legal requirement to release his tax forms.”
Tell that to Mitt.
Funny how Cruz & Rubio supporters suddenly side with the IRS, MSM and Dems. That speaks volumes.
Zing ...+10
He only needed one.
He is not required to release his private tax information.
That would be fun!

Trump will release his tax returns when barry sotero releases his college and Harvard Law school transcripts...we have waited 8 long years
Tax return does not give any clue of net worth. For example if all your 2 million dollars were in CD's last year, you got may be $500 in interest. And that is all you will see on the tax return..interest income $500. Tax return has no place to show you own $2 million dollars worth CD's.
I agree the tax system is corrupt, the IRS is corrupt, I wouldn’t give them a damn thing after what the IRS did to tea party groups with NO consequences SCREW THEM!!!! Mr Trump DO NOT show ANYONE a damn thing!!!! It used to be a huge thing with the public about such things however the IRS has become a laughing stock and if many Americans could get away with it we would ALL say screw you IRS I’m not filing!!!
