In a bit of unusual news, the Utah Senate voted 20-6 to ask Congress to repeal the 17th Amendment of the Constitution. The 17th Amendment allows for the direct election of senators. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Al Jackson (R-Highland) argued that the 17th Amendment was not what the founders of the country had intended and changed the meaning of the role of the senators.

Awesome. Senators would represent state governments...as was intended.
The title is misleading too. As pre-17th the States could elected a Senator in a broad general election. Pre-17th they just had more options, well just options as there are none today.

I wonder if he would be proposing this if the senates of most states were not in the control of his party? Ya think?
All for show as there is not a snowballs chance in Hell that the Senate is going to vote to put itself out of a job.
Article V is the only way to go if you want this.

BTW, the two amendments I would support in a convention of states would be 1) repealing the 17A and 2) term limits which I haven’t supported before because it takes choice out of the voters hands, but the problem with career politicians is so bad that I think term limits would d more good than harm.
Be careful with what you wish for. Think of the California, Illinois, New York and other States in the North East legislatures-all liberal Democrats.

The 17th amendment removed the States from representation at the Federal Level... I have advocated its repealed for a long long time.
I like this approach, even though it is certain to fail.
The idea of Constitutional Convention is dangerous. Once convened said convention can do anything it wants to do.
Regardless of the legal reason for it having convened.

This would be a good start to reverse the direction of the country from being ruled by an oligarchy.
Yes! This would be a good thing, returning more power back to the states. Senators often vote as a block representing Democrat issues rather than their own state’s needs. Too much power has been diverted away from states to the monstrous federal government.
The peasants should have no right to make decisions over who represents them.
Career state politicians like her daddy and RINO/Democrat friends in the Alaska Senate know whats best for us.

Yes the convention could go off on a tangent, however, any changes would still have to be ratified by 2/3 of the States. That’s a pretty strong check on radical ideas.
