Real estate mogul Donald Trump would not let states take control of federal lands, the Republican presidential candidate said in a recent interview.
"I don't like the idea because I want to keep the lands great, and you don't know what the state is going to do," Trump said during a talk with Field & Stream magazine earlier this week.
The trade publication, sitting down with Trump at Las Vegas' Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show, had asked about the issue of turning over federally controlled lands to individual states -- an idea previously floated by rival 2016 contender and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and supported by staunch states-rights activists.
The proposal has also received more attention in light of recent actions by radical conservatives like Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his son Ammon Bundy, who led an armed group earlier this month in occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon to protest federal land use policies.
Trump cautioned, however, that states would be unpredictable in maintaining the designated lands.
"I mean, are they going to sell if they get into a little bit of trouble?" Trump asked. "I don't think it's something that should be sold."
He added: "We have to be great stewards of this land. This is magnificent land. And we have to be great stewards of this land."
The billionaire businessman suggested later in the interview that while he was a fan of oil and gas companies drilling and fracking on federal lands, protecting the earth should still be a top priority.
"I'm very much into energy, and I'm very much into fracking and drilling, and we never want to be hostage again to OPEC and go back to where we were. And right now, we're at a very interesting point because right now there's so much energy," Trump said. "And maybe that's an advantage and maybe--actually, it's more of an advantage in terms of your question because we don't have to do the kind of drilling that we did."
"I am for energy exploration, as long as we don't do anything to damage the land. And right now we don't need too much -- there's a lot of energy," he said.
bkmk
I hate to break this to you (reality), but....
he already has done something to hurt America or Americans. He supported and donated to the very same leftist Democrats that have been feverishly working to destroy us from within. The only question is, was it, in fact, "purposely"? If so, Trump is a danger to the USA as CIC. And even if not, if he's that clueless, uninformed and bumbling....we can ill afford yet another president 'like that' at this crucial time. And yeah, that is a harsh reality that we are facing. You might want to try to get used to facing it. It ain't going away.
Why don't you wait until Cruz drops out, (I predict within 30 days) then come back when you have something to really complain about.
If you don’t like or approve of what I have to say, that’s your problem. Don’t read my posts as a simple (perhaps too simple for you) solution.
As for Cruz, he may well drop out... to the cheering and jeering of many, if not most, of the Trump fans and sycophants. Time will tell. And how proud you all will be to have finally driven out the ONLY real conservative in this election...and in effect, handed the victory over to, yet again, America’s enemies within.
I hope, if that happens, that you can live with yourselves and with the end results of your choices. End results that will have dire consequences for your children, grandchildren and your entire family, as well as for our nation. Trump hasn’t changed his spots from five years ago. He has just successfully managed to fool enough people into thinking and believing so. That’s another ‘harsh reality’.
You are a piker compared to what Beck said today. If we elect Trump there will be civil war.
Beck also needs to catch up to reality. Civil War II has been a possibility ....fast becoming a probability....as the only solution to our deliberate destruction from our leftist enemies within for years now...since merely voting no longer seems to work in our favor. Beck is just displaying his really keen sense of the effing obvious.
Nope. That's about Territories, not states.
Article 1 Section 8 Clause 17:
To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings
In other words the Fed gets 10 sq miles in DC and has to ask states permission to use land for Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings
Some states would corruptly develop the land and ruin it for wild life. On the other hand, we have the Federal government who abuses everyone who wants to rightly use it.
Life just really sucks sometimes.
Rolling Stone eh?
You need to do a lot more homework to get anywhere near an accurate context. The only lobbers here are viewers like you that soak up the nonsense taken out of context and throw it out to sow confusion.
That was my point. Alarmist title, for a comment nowhere near as “incendiary” as what Goldwater said so many years ago, and still made it to General Election candidate.
