Marco Rubio has awkward confrontation with Rafael Cruz, Cruz staffer in hotel lobby
The DP ^ | 2/20/16 | By Ellie Schroeder

Let's dispel the notion that Marco Rubio did not know who he was talking to. When Rubio walked into the lobby of the Columbia Hampton Inn this morning -- conveniently the same one where the Daily Pennsylvanian staffers are posting up in South Carolina and were eating breakfast around 10:30 a.m. -- he was presumably not expecting to run into Rafael Cruz, father of presidential candidate Ted Cruz, and Cruz campaign staffer Christian Collins.

However, once he saw them he decided to have some fun with them.

"Got a good book there," Rubio said to Collins, a young Cruz staffer in a suit, about the book he was reading over his cup of coffee.

"Not many answers in it, especially that one" Rubio added tersely and walked out of the lobby without a backward glance.

Collins was visibly taken aback after being addressed by his boss' political rival. Rafael Cruz and Collins proceeded to discuss under the incident in hushed voices for several minutes.

-snip-.

UPDATE: a Cruz staffer just confirmed that the book in question was a Bible.

I barely recognized Rubio without that “deer caught in the headlights” look he normally has when he knows the camera is on him. Strikes me as a little punk behind the scenes.

So are you insinuating that Catholics don’t know what a Bible looks like?
Not defending Rubio as I think this episode is horrible and I’m not a supporter of him.

So? The video doesn’t lie. He blew past Cruz’s dad, dissed on the Cruz staffer, then jetted.

It showed contempt and arrogance.

Marco Rubio was great in Florida house and Senate leadership, very innovative, strong and ask for many suggestions from those of us in local pubby committee's. He got great ideas from us,and later implemented a lot of them. My only issue with him besides being a bit short is that he did not serve all of the Senate term. Cruz never intended to serve 6years,he took his Senate oath, then started running g for President. What manipulating creepy behavior is that?

So you were ok with Rubio when he lied to us during his senate run telling us that he was going to fight amnesty and then joined the Gang of 8? You were ok with him not showing up to do his job? I have more if you would like the laundry list.

I voted for Rubio when he ran and I now regret it. But I do know other Floridians who still like him. I myself became disgusted with him.

And Rubio will never get my vote.

They know what the big family Catholic bible collecting dust on the top shelf with all the baptismal dates and confirmation dates recorded in them, looks like. But not a Bible that one would carry with them to church or frequently read. I went through 12 years of parochial scholol, and never once in our religion classes did we do any Bible study. It was all about studying church traditions and papal encyclicals.

Your opinion, SteveSCH . . not mine. There is a reason the novice ‘reporter’ felt compelled to post what is ‘supposedly’ being said by Rubio. Ask yourself for what reason would the faux ‘verbiage’ be necessary. There can be one reason only: it is impossible to clearly and unerringly decipher adequately what the video is possibly ‘fraudulently’ stating.
I can’t believe anyone with the stature of a Freeper would just arbitrarily believe Rubio would make such a stupid statement in the first place . . and then to continue to read the words that this young student posted as if anyone could honestly determine what the words actually are. With all due respect, SteveSCH . . you’re smarter than to fall for this young guy’s scam for Cruz. BTW, I’m not a Rubio fan. Go Trump

I listened to it carefully a number of times and I believe he really said it the way the OP is reporting it. Why would he say it? Maybe to poke fun at the Cruz campaign’s special branding as an evangelical effort? As if to say, the Good Book doesn’t have answers for the Cruz campaign. I know that’s speculative, can’t read his mind, but it is a possibility, and a better one for Rubio than what it looks like on the surface. On the other hand, it could be just as bad as it looks. Who knows?

BTW, I do not buy this has anything to do with the staffer misrepresenting anything. Look at the guy’s face. I know that look. I’ve experienced it. Somebody you think would never say something so shocking, and then they say it, but they’re the big dog, so you just hold it in. There was real hurt written all over that face. Whatever happened, the staffer’s face reflects an unrehearsed honest moment of shock. That’s how it looks to me.

Peace,

SR

Well, as I said originally, it’s a special sort of stupid to have actually said that, assuming he did.

Rubio went right up to it and pointed at the page. The only way he wouldn’t have known it was a Bible is if he’s never opened a Bible.

I don’t think that audio is all that bad. I’ve heard worse and been able to make sense of it. You just keep playing the problematic section over and over again, syncing the lip movement to the audio sequence, and at some point the options get pretty limited. For my money, the OP’s analysis seems right. Any FReeper with some serious experience in audio forensics should weigh in and maybe provide some confirmation. It’s an important event, if accurately reported.

Peace,

SR

This post has nothing to do with Trump.

Shame you never bothered to keep to the real subject.

Rubio didn’t say “there aren’t any answers in there.”

He appears to say “maybe the answer’s in there.”

Bad audio. Instead of “not many answers in there” - which is unlikely anyone in his right mind would say - Rubester could just as well be saying “a great many answers in there.”

No, I think Rubio said “Maybe the answer’s in it.” It seemed like he was having a bit of fun at the staffer’s expense and then maybe realized it was a Bible, so he said “especially that one.”

No matter what one thinks of Marco, it would be hard to believe he’d tell someone in front of a room full of people he knows oppose him that there are no answers in the Bible.

I’m anti-Rubio but this is garbage. Why would anyone say “got a good book there” and then “not many answers in it”.

More Cruz fanatic trash.

I tried that, substituting better alternatives that match the lip movements. The most realistic pattern I could find was what was reported, and fits much better with obvious distress on the face of the staffer. Normal folks don’t look like that when you’re saying something positive and affirming. Not in my experience.

Peace,

SR
