Voting has ended in the South Carolina Republican primary, and exit polls suggest Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are in contention for the top three spots.
Trump went into the vote as the front-runner after a frenzied final week of campaigning that saw the billionaire real-estate mogul wage a rhetorical war with Pope Francis and several candidates bluntly accuse their rivals of peddling outright lies.

It appears that is not the case though.
The results from these early, proportional races matter for raising campaign cash, not getting the nomination. When winner-take-all kicks in, the victor will become obvious.
