Antonin Scalia’s death should strengthen Ted Cruz’s case for the GOP nomination
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | February 14, 2016 | Chris Cillizza

The stunning death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia -- announced just hours before the six remaining Republican presidential candidates gathered Saturday in South Carolina for a debate -- immediately ups the ante in the GOP primary and could well cement the base's commitment to nominating a "true" conservative along the lines of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

"We ought to make the 2016 election a referendum on the Supreme Court," Cruz told NBC's Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press" Sunday. "I cannot wait to stand on that debate stage with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders and talk about what the Supreme Court will look like depending on who wins."

As Cruz well knows, there is no issue that so animates the Republican base as appointments to the judicial bench -- most notably the Supreme Court. Many conservatives have never forgiven then-President George H.W. Bush for appointing David Souter to the court -- only to see Souter turn into a less-than-ideal conservative pick. George W. Bush's 2005 nomination of Harriet Miers was scuttled by conservatives who believed her past record demonstrated a lack of fealty to their principles....

The thing about Judge Roberts and the position he took on 0bamacare reminded me of the Judge in the OJ Simpson case.

They both seemed to bend over backwards to give the benefit of doubt back to others. In Judge Ito’s case, I think that he thought the jury would find OJ guilty and wanted to make sure there was no room for a re-trial. As for Roberts, I believe he was convinced that 0bama would never win reelection and that the issue would be taken up by the next President and Congress.

Sure. Heart Attack gun is a real thing. Spy novels could make good use of it. Why not take out a SCOTUS who is about to rule on an important case. In the hands of that guy who writes lawyer mysteries it could be interesting.

It should strengthen our resolve to vote for the candidate that wins the nomination-whoever it is.

I don’t believe any of the Presidential polls, even Trump. Neither side has a candidate and there has been no campaigning against one another. Just another media way to try and control the narrative.

Easy for you to say.

Sounds like you need a time out or maybe attend a 12 step meeting.

This is important to our whole freaking nation. This isn’t about cheerleading for your candidate and saying gotcha. This is freaking serious! I think Justice Scalia would be okay with us not wasting time figuring out who would be the best person to pick his replacement and getting United behind him FAST.

Doubtful that it will.

The torches are lit, pitchforks are sharpened and Republicans appear to be hellbent on nominating Trump regardless of the consequences.

Garbage, it is obvious you see this as nothing more then a political opportunity to promote cruz. At least pretend for a day to have a little reverence out of respect for the rest of us.

We are talking about a NOVEL . Come one. This story is a perfect set up for a murder mystery blockbuster film or novel. Kind of like the Pelican Brief.

I just happen to like the irony of a Ted Cruz type character who actually has high level contacts in the intelligence world offing the guy who was opposed to his nomination based on Jus Soli since it is the candidate who would actually replace dead Justice once elected.

Ted Cruz isn’t going to do such a thing but a Ted Cruz type character could be made to do such a thing for a murder mystery,.

easy for me to do too. Scalia’s death is a wake up call. We have to support the nominee and we have to support them vigorously.

It is funny to watch Cruz supporters talking about replacing Scalia when Scalia is that one that wanted Jus Soli for Natural Born Citizen.

Cruz supporters want to side with Ginsburg.

You know you could use this thread to tell us why you think Trump is qualified to pick a Supreme Court Justice, but I understand why you would rather act all offended by the discussion and try to shut it down.

“...could well cement the base’s commitment to nominating a “true” conservative along the lines of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.”

This “true conservative” mantra makes me think of “the true believer” frenzy that grips peoples’ minds. I have been paying attention to every presidential election since 1980 and I don’t remember anything like it.

It is much too late in the game for this country to be saved by an ideology; even if it is conservatism, as if World War II could have been won with conservatism. People are flooding across our borders and plenty are terrorists, and idiot, foolish politicians prefer to say that it is the country’s obligation to bring people who broke into the country illegally “out of the shadows” and put them on the taxpayers’ dime.

If the country is to be saved, it will require a fight to stop the inertia that is propelling us to our destruction, and the fight must start immediately. And the fight will have to take the form outlined by Donald Trump. There is no way around it.

The supposed “true conservative” (Cruz) has been meekly following Trump through the months, absorbing stands that Trump popularizes, then tries to make voters believe that he is out front originating these stands while misrepresenting what Trump believes on social issues. The much touted “true conservative”, the “consistent conservative” is nothing but a deceptive phony.
