GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump says he does not agree with comments from Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia questioning the efficacy of affirmative action.
"I don't like what he said, no, I donât like what he said. I heard him, I was like, 'Let me read it again,' because I actually read it in print, and Iâm going, I read a lot of stuff, and Iâm going, 'Woah,'" Trump said in an interview televised Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."
The billionaire said he thought Scalia's comments were "very tough to the African-American community."
Trump, who has supported affirmative action in the past but declined to say whether he was in favor of it today, said he has great friendships with black people.
"I have great African-American friendships," he said. "I have just amazing relationships. And so many positive things have happened."
In oral argument for a case challenging affirmative action at public universities earlier this week, Scalia posited that minority students who were not qualified for admission at elite universities would perform better at "less-advanced schools."
Scalia was excoriated by Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who called his comments "racist."
Oh goodie another nothing burger!!!
Go Trump!
Does anyone even care anymore that the media spends all their print space and news time trying to nail Trump? They are blatantly opposing the GOP frontrunner, looking for ways to defeat the people’s choice.
Does anyone see it? Does anyone care?
These low life cruz supporters will try to get all the anti Trump mileage we can out of Antonin Scalia’s death.
The more he talks, the more he sounds like a liberal. He may very well run out the clock. I bet half his supporters will be sorry in October when we’re stuck with him.
How so, Donald?
It’s really important that when someone is a Conservative Icon that one never disagrees with anything they say! Donald Trump can’t be a consistent Conservative because he is not a respecter of persons. He just says whatever comes into his mind about someone, not realizing the he might be damaging the Conservative Movement by saying something about one of its Icons.
This is totally unacceptable! Luckily, Mitch McConnell is not a Conservative Icon, and a dirty rotten liar to boot!
Scalia posited that minority students who were not qualified for admission at elite universities would perform better at “less-advanced schools.”
Why in the world would such an obvious and reasoned statement be the least bit controversial...?
Just another TD sufferer reposting old articles in a lame effort to persuade Trump supporters to abandon him and flip to another candidate.
Not going to work at this stage in the game.
Scalia asked a hypothetical question based on one of the briefs.
The MSM quoted it out of context.
Then they asked Trump about it.
Yawn.
Setting students up to fail by placing them into academic programs that are well above their abilities, for any reason, is not a good thing. But, it’s very difficult to say that without charges of racism being thrown about. It doesn’t “sound” good even if it’s accurate.
Scalia’s wording in that decision is easily construed as demeaning to blacks. I agree with Scalia’s opinion but he could have worded it better. Good luck winning a general election digging in your heals defending every single word.
I didn’t like Regan’s amnesty.
That means I despised Regan completely.
/Cruz fan logic.
more evidence that trump is a clueless wonder. He didn’t even have a clear grasp of what Scalia was talking about and piped off with his liberal vomit.
That tells me he is inherently liberal, HIS core.
The majority of the GOP does NOT choose Trump. And his unpopularity extends to liberals and independents, who Gallup polling shows dislike Trump more than any other Republican.
Trump is a New York values leftist at heart. Often, as in this interview, he’s ignorant enough of what conservatives believe to forget to dodge questions on what he really thinks about the liberal agenda.
Notice the media always states controversial when our side makes a comment, just like the radical right wing, right wing extremists, or the republicans are going further to the right?
Yet they have a socialist running and a woman under investigation who has already bene found lying.
You can’t even make this up about the media anymore.
Reagan’s amnesty was predicated on closing the door to future illegal immigration, and was well before it became such a widespread issue. What seemed to be the right thing at the time ended up setting a bad precedent. I don’t fault Reagan for anything there except trusting his opposition to do what they said they’d do.
Here's a clue, Scalia didn't issue an "opinion" on this case. No one has yet.
I remember that. It always seemed to me a clear-cut case of Trump scanning an article a bit too fast.
Trying to portray Scalia as racist is nothing? Damn he’s a con artist.
