During the Republican debate on Saturday night, Donald Trump floated two names as potential nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court: Judge Diane S. Sykes and Judge Bill Pryor.
âWe could have a Diane Sykes or a Bill Pryor, we have some fantastic people,â Trump told the audience. Both judges are well-known conservatives serving on the federal level.
Who is Diane S. Sykes?
Sykes is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She was nominated by George W. Bush and confirmed in 2004. She went to Northwestern University and attended Marquette University Law School. She was dropped as a name for the U.S. Supreme Court under President George W. Bush. She was part of the 2011 panel that held a Chicago ban on firing ranges unconstitutional. Prior to being appointed on the federal court, Sykes served as Justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Who is Bill Pryor?
Pryor is a federal judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2003. His nomination was filibustered so in 2004, President Bush installed the former Alabama Attorney General on the court during a congressional recess appointment. Democrats scrutinized Pryor for some of his conservative stands, including on Roe v. Wade. Pryor previously said, according to confirmation hearing testimony, that Roe was âthe worst abomination in constitutional law in history.â After a higher court ruling on a Alabama execution case, he allegedly ridiculed the Supreme Court by saying âThis issue should not be decided by nine octogenarian lawyers who happen to sit on the Supreme Court.â Most recently, Pryor was nominated by President Obama to sit on the United States Sentencing Commission.
No you don't know what Trump thought...All you know is what he said...No one took Trump's statement seriously...He was speaking about his sister...We certainly wouldn't expect Trump or anyone to tell the world and his sister that she would make a lousy judge...
Trump has stated publicly numerous times since then that he would appoint judges in the vein of Clarence Thomas...But I'll bet that is one thing you DO know
Ooh! Guy says something nice about his sister - how scandalous!
Didn't you hear Cruz's attempt to weasel around his advocacy of his friend John Roberts to be nominated to the Supreme Court?
What this sounds like is Trump is doing his homework.
When do you stop laying on the icing. Trump said his sister was great, fantastic, then even pronominal. That is enough, but Trump went on to say "I THINK SHE WOULD BE ONE OF THE BEST" you are showing what you think should be on the SCOTUS.
My sister (if I had one) would probable be great, she would probable even be fantastic, but if she supported partial birth abortion, I would not be saying she would be one of the best SCOTUS justices if she supported ripping babies apart even at the verge of birth. I especially would not be supporting her if she was the person taking down one of the greatest judges we have now days (Judge Roy Moore) as Bill Pryor did.
Please. No Harvard or Yale law school grads please.
I linked the video, I think Trump was very serious. In case you missed it, start watching at 15:45 and see for yourself his tone.
You have absolutely no basis ghost for knowing if they would be good choices.
They wouldn’t be good choices just because Trump said they would be.
Keep in mind that it’s Trump saying it, not a normal human being. Any words that come out of his mouth have to be viewed as a tactic and nothing more.
Hope the woman wasn’t a stripper at some point...
Great! So there's precedent for doing something like this (nominating judges during Congressional recess). I can see the Zero using this as ammo for nominating his own leftist hack to the SC right now while the Senate is in recess.
I just read about Scalia's passing today, and was shocked! This is ground-breaking, earth-shattering news. We all must oppose whomever he nominates. There can be no question that any infighting must now stop! We must be focused like a LASER in stopping his plans!
Bu he time Trump, Cruz, Rubio, Bush or Kasich is inaugurated, the boy king will have his appointee seated.
There is no way, the Republican wing of the Uni-party will not cave on this like they have on damn near every thing else.
That will give the Socialist wing of the Uni-party absolute power, with no checks. 6-3, 7-2 Decisions equal a rubber stamp.
Who are you?
Where are you from?
Why are you calling me a ghost?
Cruz article on John Roberts: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/214989/right-stuff-ted-cruz
To be fair, we ALL thought John Roberts would be a good judicial appointment.
I think she would be pronominal
**********
Copy and paste fail. What does that mean?
Hope the woman wasnât a stripper at some point...
Probably be a better justice if she was.
Jeff Sessions would be a good justice
Except Cruz gave the name of the person he supported over Roberts.
You are repeating a false meme
The case you mentioned both she and Alito voted exactly the same. They waited until the SCOTUS decided on an identical case from Nebrasca Then they followed the higher courts ruling. If you have a beef take it up with the SC. Not the lower justices that followed their ruling
She spoke for Alito at his Supreme Court hearing. They are still close friends
Get your facts straight
How about Judge Jeanine Pirro?
You're right that is silly. I'll repeat what I said before (recently): we need to stop infighting now, and unite on stopping Obama's appointee. We know it's coming (a recess appointment) his "strategy" is obvious. So we need to put aside the Cruz/Trump wars, at least for now, and focus on stopping the One.
Or else this election is already over; it will already be a useless election if Obama succeeds getting another leftist in the SC. He will just ram through a truckload of leftist garbage that the country will never recover from; it's already looking bleak for the country. Let's not allow, through our petty infighting, Obama to succeed. As another poster said on another thread, the US is on life-support. A confirmed Obama nominee will pull the plug on the nation.
I say all of this as a Cruz supporter. I say again, you were right to call criticism of Trump's names "silly". Trump was the only one to name names last night (as far as I understand). I say all of this to forward the agenda of uniting, not dividing. Something we seem all too good at (destroying each other). It needs to stop, now.
