Cruz: Scalia 'changed the course of legal history'
The Hill ^ | February 13, 2016 | Bradford Richardson

Posted on 02/13/2016 2:49:41 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday was quick laud Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on the news of his death Saturday, saying he "changed the course of legal history."

"Today our nation mourns the loss of one of the greatest Justices in history - Justice Antonin Scalia," Cruz said in a statement to The Hill. "A Champion of our liberties and a stalwart defender of the Constitution, he will go down as one of the few Justices who single-handedly changed the course of legal history."

Cruz praised Scalia for his forceful opinions on the court, including the controversial 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller decision upholding the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment.

"As liberals and conservatives alike would agree, through his powerful and persuasive opinions, Justice Scalia fundamentally changed how courts interpret the Constitution and statutes, returning the focus to the original meaning of the text after decades of judicial activism," he said.

"And he authored some of the most important decisions ever, including District of Columbia v. Heller, which recognized our fundamental right under the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms," he added.

"He was an unrelenting defender of religious liberty, free speech, federalism, the constitutional separation of powers, and private property rights. All liberty-loving Americans should be in mourning."

He said Scalia's three decades on the Court was "one of President Reagan's most consequential legacies."

"Our prayers are with his beloved wife Maureen, their nine children, and their precious grandchildren," he added.

Scalia, 79, was found dead Saturday of natural causes during a hunting vacation in Texas.

He was nominated for the Supreme Court in 1986 by President Reagan and championed the legal doctrine of Originalism during his time on the bench.

I hope had GOP, miserable though it may be, resists and denies any Obama appointee.

I think the best people for nominating good ones would be Cruz or Rubio. Of course, either one of them would also be good as a justice.

Reading Cruz’s statement, I can hear his piercing, nasal voice, declaiming. Just as he talks like an orator, not a human, he writes like an orator, not a human.

Can't we put aside the petty digs at a moment like this and unite in mourning the passing of such a great man?

I would hope the supporters of all the GOP candidates would unite to try to prevent Obama from nominating Justice Scalia's replacement.

Cruz is a worthless Canadian. He has no chance in the general and would ensure a Hillary victory. Quit trying to campaign on Justice Scalia. Sick!

Another Cruz thread and another worthless post from patriciaQ.

Couldn't be any worse than Roberts....see, I can sling shit right back at ya, doesn't take any talent if you get my drift.

Trump likes Scalia and Thomas, he was being kind to his sister.

Why don't you knock off the attacks and concentrate on the real enemies, sanders and clintoon for a change?

RIP Scalia. Decent people everywhere thank you for your service, and we thank you for not leaving your seat during Soetoro’s administration. It’s a shame you were slaughtered by the Leftists instead of being able to die peacefully in retirement, but you of all people know that making this country great demands sacrifice.

I am not surprised the Cruz sickos take this opportunity to place a soapbox on Scalia`s warm corpse and campaign for Ted Cruz.

You Cruz folks need to pull yourselves together, your gonna burn out and be in the funny farm before you get a chance to vote for Cruz

Add Cruz wrote a piece in his favorite magazine supporting Chief Justice Roberts

Was that before or after Roberts went off the rails?

Another lie about Ted Cruz from a Trump supporter.

How so ...........Unexpected.

Cruz penned an article in support of Roberts in 2005, long before Roberts showed any liberal tendencies.

I don't mind being in the minority, and I will tell you my opinion (because I don't care what someone on the internet says about me): Roberts, by punting the decision back to the electorate, espoused a conservative legal opinion.

Just because conservatives don't like the way the decision broke, doesn't mean that the decision itself is not conservative. (Before anyone goes crazy, the alternative at the other end of the scale is "judicial activism").

So basically what happened is, after getting screwed-over at every stage of the political process, we hoped the SCOTUS would help. But it didn't. And now we're mad.
