Cruz: Scalia 'changed the course of legal history'
The Hill ^ | February 13, 2016 | Bradford Richardson

Posted on 02/13/2016 2:49:41 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday was quick laud Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on the news of his death Saturday, saying he "changed the course of legal history."

"Today our nation mourns the loss of one of the greatest Justices in history - Justice Antonin Scalia," Cruz said in a statement to The Hill. "A Champion of our liberties and a stalwart defender of the Constitution, he will go down as one of the few Justices who single-handedly changed the course of legal history."

Cruz praised Scalia for his forceful opinions on the court, including the controversial 2008 District of Columbia v. Heller decision upholding the right to bear arms under the Second Amendment.

"As liberals and conservatives alike would agree, through his powerful and persuasive opinions, Justice Scalia fundamentally changed how courts interpret the Constitution and statutes, returning the focus to the original meaning of the text after decades of judicial activism," he said.

"And he authored some of the most important decisions ever, including District of Columbia v. Heller, which recognized our fundamental right under the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms," he added.

"He was an unrelenting defender of religious liberty, free speech, federalism, the constitutional separation of powers, and private property rights. All liberty-loving Americans should be in mourning."

He said Scalia's three decades on the Court was "one of President Reagan's most consequential legacies."

"Our prayers are with his beloved wife Maureen, their nine children, and their precious grandchildren," he added.

Scalia, 79, was found dead Saturday of natural causes during a hunting vacation in Texas.

He was nominated for the Supreme Court in 1986 by President Reagan and championed the legal doctrine of Originalism during his time on the bench.

Reading Cruz’s statement, I can hear his piercing, nasal voice, declaiming. Just as he talks like an orator, not a human, he writes like an orator, not a human.

Add Cruz wrote a piece in his favorite magazine supporting Chief Justice Roberts

Really? How effing rabid and unhinged do you have to be to turn Scalia's death into dig against Cruz.

Give it a damn break.

Following the news of Justice Scalia’s passing, Governor Abbott released the following statement:

“Justice Antonin Scalia was a man of God, a patriot, and an unwavering defender of the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution. His fierce loyalty to the Constitution set an unmatched example, not just for judges and lawyers, but for all Americans. We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.”

Ginsburg has to know there’s no point resigning this late in the Obama regime.

The fact that it’s an election year just might give the RINO Senate the courage to confirm NO ONE Obama nominates.

Breitbarted.

They're already claiming "natural causes" - how could they know already without a full autopsy? Call me a "Conspiracy Theorist Nutjob", but coming so soon after 0bama's smackdown on Climate Change, I'm thinking "Pelican Brief Scenario".

Justice Scalia was a great American!

Cruz is a worthless Canadian. He has no chance in the general and would ensure a Hillary victory. Quit trying to campaign on Justice Scalia. Sick!

Nov 12, 2013:

While swearing in new Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht, Republican Gov. Rick Perry suggested U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia matched well with Texas politics, both of which tend to fall right of center on the political spectrum.

“We welcome you to Texas, sir,” Perry said. “You would fit right in.”

Scalia agreed with Perry’s observation and added that that if he didn’t live in Virginia, he’d might want to live in the Lone Star State, which is historically Republican.

“I do fit right in here,” he replied. “If I wasn’t a Virginian, I probably would want to be a Texan.”..

Justice Scalia was an American hero. We owe it to him, & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next President names his replacement.

All the Pubs in the Senate have to do is say we will wait till the new POTUS takes office. Then it will be up to us to elect a POTUS who actually knows who to pick.

It's obvious Cruz is the man for the job.

maybe Trump will nominate Cruz.. maybe

While I think Cruz would be phenomenal if Trump were POTUS I doubt he would nominate a real conservative. He's more likely to pick a northeast liberal whom he's familiar with.

“...maybe Trump will nominate Cruz.. maybe...”

I’m not so sure. Trump keeps bragging about his being raised & living in Manhattan his entire life — growing up with “NYC-Values”... Will he appoint a Scalia, or another Kennedy (well, hopefully no worse than Kennedy), or would he look to a northeast-RINO / NYC-Values justice like Souter — or worse, a Kagen/Sotomayor?

I hope Cruz doesn’t try to use this for his own aggrandizement. That would be despicable.

Of course, I would have to agree with you since NOTHING ever happens in politics by accident-—NOTHING. (FDR).

This is a BIG deal-—MAJOR event. Something that can permanently destroy the SCOTUS-—put it in the complete hands of Marxists, never to be revived. It is equivalent to how the Tea Party movement was castrated with the death of Breitbart.
