[I]n a campaign that has seemingly tested every political rule, Mr. Trumpâs opponents hope his latest provocation will be too much for well-mannered voters in this heavily evangelical Christian state to bear: his use of a pungently vulgar word this week to describe one of his rivals, Senator Ted Cruz.
Mr. Trumpâs raunchy language has become unsurprising at his rallies. And the slur against Mr. Cruz was largely overshadowed by the coverage of the next dayâs New Hampshire primary.
But in voicing the crude term, Mr. Trump has further polarized a Republican Party already deeply divided about his candidacy, particularly across class lines.
His backers, who polls indicate include many without a college degree, see his willingness to speak coarsely as yet another refreshing example of his resistance to political correctness.
His critics, many of them more affluent, view his language as a particularly vivid sign that he lacks basic decency and is ill suited to the nationâs highest office.
The differing reactions are already playing out on the campaign trail.
Rebecca Sardella, who attended a rally for Senator Marco Rubio this week in Myrtle Beach, said she was offended by Mr. Trumpâs language.
âThe way he speaks â that doesnât sound like somebody who really believes in God that much,â said Ms. Sardella, who works for a nondenominational church in North Myrtle Beach. âYou want your children to look up at the president of the United States.â
But at a rally Thursday in an arena in Baton Rouge, La., Mr. Trumpâs supporters treated his profane remark about Mr. Cruz like the hit song of a touring rock band, pleading with him to let it rip again.
âTheyâre all saying, âDo it! Do it!â â he told a clamorous crowd of nearly 10,000, acknowledging their chants.

It was not necessary. Cruz approves of waterboarding clearly said it is enhanced torture.
He disapproves of torture. Yet DT was stretching truth again pretending Cruz was against waterboarding.
Oh, yes, Maggie Haberman would NEVER want any political figure to be “divisive” or to “split voters”.
What they mean when they say this is not that candidates should behave, it’s that VOTERS and SUBJECTS (oops, sorry - I meant CITIZENS) should behave.
I’ll take Cruz’s voting record over the Donald’s voting record which is the voting record of all the democrats the Donald has helped get elected.
NY Slimes. Enough already. Tedious
.
It does not matter what Cruz is. I don’t know. Ameraca is done because the masses are immoral and godless and many will soon be destroyed.
>> if he wins he won’t get ANYWHERE in legislation and Congress...and if he does all will be locked through the courts <<
Not to worry about deadlock, because Trump’s legal consigliere Michael D. Cohen will threaten to sue every congressperson and judge who stands in the way. The tactic has worked very well for Trump’s business ventures.
And if that doesn’t get the job done, I wonder if maybe Trump’s Mafia buddies can pay visits to recalcitrant members of Congress and the judiciary? Could be effective?
But if all else fails, I guess Emperor Trump can just rule by decree. Much easier to get things done that way.
..Trump wants now what he still wants most:... more.
We called nerds like Cruz Pussy’s.
Ugly elitist racist bias... what else can we expect from the New York Times?
Any chance the suck-ups at the Times will tell us the education and class level of Hillary's supporters? You know 'the democrat base'...
Good for you!
I hope that works out for you as you grow up.
what vote is recorded to cut the military?
In their defense, I think they misspelled effluent...
Cruz was and still is what we called a whimp, a pansy, a wuss, a momma’s boy, and; every name other then a real man in the 50-60’s. Cruz was the punk who wore his paisley bathrobe in college and walked all the way down to the ladies side where they showered and made themselves up for the day. Had a gal I dated or any of my friends dated mentioned this to a one of us- Cruz would have been spitting out teeth and his damn nose would have been on one side of his face.
Donald Trump is the only politician to ever utter a swear word!

Vice President Joe Biden
2010: Known for his blunt talk, Vice President Joe Biden was heard telling Obama “this is a big f——— deal” during the March 23, 2010, signing of the health care reform bill. While he was whispering into the president’s ear, the profanity was picked up by nearby microphones.
Vice President Dick Cheney
2004: Tensions are nothing new on the Senate floor. But an incident between Vice President Dick Cheney and a Democratic senator took it to another level.
Cheney told Sen. Patrick Leahy on June 24, 2004, to “go f-— yourself” when the Vermont Democrat blasted Halliburton’s role in Iraq.
Sen. John Kerry
“I voted for what I thought was best for the country. ... Did I expect George Bush to f-— it up as badly as he did? I don’t think anybody did,” Kerry said, referring to his vote allowing the U.S. to use military force in Iraq.
Kerry also made news during the campaign when he reportedly called his Secret Service agent a “son of a bitch.”
George W. Bush
2000: Then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, running in the 2000 presidential race, was caught on a live microphone tearing into New York Times reporter Adam Clymer. At a Labor Day 2000 rally in Naperville, Illinois, Bush called him a “major-league a—hole.”
President Harry S. Truman
I didn’t fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was, but that’s not against the law for generals. If it was, half to three-quarters of them would be in jail.”
Sen. John McCain
2007: McCain’s temper is nothing new to those who know the Arizona senator.
And that anger especially came out in a May 17, 2007, meeting on immigration, according to The Washington Post.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, was none too happy when McCain showed up late, saying, “wait a second here. I’ve been sitting in here for all of these negotiations, and you just parachute in here on the last day. You’re out of line.”
McCain shot back, “F-— you! I know more about this than anyone else in the room.”
President Lyndon B. Johnson
1965: In a discussion about Cyprus in 1965, Johnson reportedly told Greek Ambassador Alexandros Matsas, “f-— your parliament and your constitution.”
ETC, ETC, ETC.
A woman in the audience actually said Cruz was a pussy. Here is a current twitter account from Cruz’s college roommate at Princeton. This guy is right about Cruz.

Aren’t you a “very, very” tough guy?!
...with a “very, very huge” sense of self-importance?!
I am so impressed with your “very” tough talk and “really huge” intellect.
You must be a “very, very” important man who has earned a lot of respect from”really important people you know” because you are “very” special.
That’s a really big deal.
What I stated was fact when grew up and not a man I knew in college at Nebraska or in the Army’s Special Forces would have tolerated Cruz bothering women taking a shower and putting on make up. Apparently you are comfortable with behavior such as that. I have nothing in common with a person who objects to that. Tough guy? No just honest. You sound like a man I would not associate with and damn sure would not want near me in combat.

True.
