When did Freepers turn so nasty? (vanity)
vanity | 2/12/2016 | Optimist

Posted on 02/12/2016 10:04:27 PM PST by Optimist

Over the past several months, Free Republic has begun to show an ugly side of its members. Although admittedly comprised of many strong-willed, opinion-charged individuals presenting thoughtful, conservative insights into the topics of the day, this forum has begun to show a seamier side as the Trump-Cruz-Rubio-Carson 2016 Primary heated up. You all know what I mean. Many of you have either been at the giving or receiving end of EMOTIONALLY-charged attacks against various candidates or even individuals as their supporters.

Herewith a few thoughts I would like to share:

  1. Passion for a candidate and buying into the campaign is exciting and important for exposing others to knowledge and understanding more about "your" candidate.
  2. Most of us WILL NOT be able to have a voting impact on which individual becomes the candidate, so why such vitriol? A little perspective is really needed. What are you going to do if by mid-March (when only 20% of the country has had any type of primary vote) and your candidate has fallen off the slate? Face it ANY of these candidates are better than any Democrat or potential Independent opposition, and will have a better chance of being elected than nay 3rd/4th/obscure party candidate.
  3. When did we turn into the Ron Paul group? Sorry, I don't mean to offend, but you know what I mean: personality driven, my guy can do/say no wrong, I'm going to get in your face if you don't see things my way, and .... well, you hopefully see the similarity.
  4. None of the candidates is 100% perfect, but they all have characteristics that are admirable:
  5. Yes there are negatives for all of them, but this is THE BEST crop of candidates we have ever had to choose from, unlike past elections when it seemed inevitable that the hand-picked, it's-his-turn, establishment candidate was chosen for us. And, besides, go back and re-read number 2.
  6. And (finally?) a word about pundits: (Glenn Beck, Rush, Fox News, et. al.):

Well, this is what happens when one (Ok, I) become frustrated with the ad-hominem attacks against so many good people both on this site, and otherwise supportive of conservatism and the rise of a conservative Republican Party. We are all decent, America-loving conservatives who are driven to strive for what is best for returning this country to its pride.

Please Freepers, make your best case, and trust that whoever eventually runs against the Demobeast will, with God's light, be the right person for the job.

Let the flame-war begin, I have donned my suit! And God bless.

He was calling for a wall to be built when Donald was still a leftist funding all the enemies of limited government conservatism.

Donald has always been for Donald first, everything else including country second.

Totally agree with you...
And I was a Keyes fan way back when...even worked for him some.
You’d think people would learn...sigh.

You just hit upon the secret. Thinking twice about whether you want to post something is good sense. We are all guilty of knee jerk posting once in a while, but sometimes we regret it. Keeping a sense of humor always helps.

Anther humbling factor is to take some time outs and think about the enormous job any one of these men still left would have to try to undo the devastation and damage that has been done in the last 15 years. It will not be a cakewalk and success isn’t guaranteed. The vitriol we see here on FR will be far surpassed toward the winner.

I try to stay positive, but there is good reason to have a lot of doubt. If an election does not work, what next?

Also we have to keep in mind any major dirty tricks the Obama world marxist cabal may have in mind to undermine this coming election.

It’s the rough and tumble of politics. People are passionate about their candidate.

I stopped going to Lucianne.com because the moderators are a bunch of mamby, pamby woman (this is a salon not a saloon) and metro sexual males.

At FreeRepublic, people are free to express their anger at the establishment. This country is rapidly falling apart, culturally, economically, militarily. People are very angry and they see their candidate as the last hope to save America.

I am a Cruz, Walker, Trump supporter, and understand that they each desperately want to become the next president. So that’s why you see so many negative ads at each other. It’s called politics.

..having been around here about 16 years, this is the worst FR has been IMO

The attacks on people's faith and people of faith are striking.

My belief is that too many are seeking a secular solution to what is a spiritual problem in America. Political answers not rooted in a Judeo-Christian world view will fail IMHO.

I guess we will see if FR survives this -- more importantly, America...

The most vulgar and offensive attacks I’ve seen (not just on FR) have all come from supporters of the candidate who supposedly has the conservative/evangelical voter base market cornered. Then they’ll turn right around and proclaim that their candidate best represents their values and principles in a different post.

What the hell is that all about?

doesn’t seem any worse this time than it has been in the past..... from wiki:

‘During and after the 2008 U.S. Presidential election, according to political commentator Sean Hannity, “[E]veryone I knew basically left because of so much childish, immature personal attacks. The propensity there to eat their own. And a lot of the people — most of the people — I knew that were on it left.”[48]

I and many others have noticed FR took a nasty turn when Trump supporters started attacking Cruz and Cruz supporters in very vicious tones.
It was surprising, but maybe it shouldn't have been.

Never before have we had a front-runner so eager to savage people on our side. He's made a nice career out of slinging invective at conservatives.

When the front-runner makes a habit of calling his fellow candidates "losers", "liars", "ugly" and the like, it's no wonder that the rhetoric of his supporters turns similarly nasty.

Other primary battles have been bruising, but that was usually over policy. Trump has made personal attacks his stock in trade, and I'm ashamed that other candidates (even mine) have followed suit in a race to the gutter.

Bush comes from a conservative background, with administrative experience in what has consistently been a crucial electoral state, with the potential for earning crossover votes from the Latino community.

There is one major part of the problem. Jeb and all the Bushes are for open borders and any trade deal the globalists can dream up, and pandering to Hispanics is a must.

Yet you say Jeb "comes from a conservative background". Does he? So, conservatism means open borders, and any foreigner who can get into the US illegally did it as an "act of love" and should be allowed to stay? And rubber stamp all trade deals.

If Jeb's stances on the critical issues of this campaign are even remotely "true conservative" stances, then count me out.

That's a major part of the problem. The critical issues this time don't fit neatly into conservative and non-conservative boxes. But some keep spewing the "true conservative" line and it's almost irrelevant to those critical issues.

The politicians who call themselves conservatives have been the major backers of open borders, any and all trade deals, and pandering to ethnic groups.

The line between FR and DU has certainly been blurred lately, most notably with the Christian bashing. It’s disconcerting to see many FReepers so emotionally invested in a candidate that they stoop to mocking Christians. Never thought I’d see that here.

I don’t mind people being passionate. They are entitled to their own opinions. They are NOT, however, entitled to their own facts, and that’s where things get not only ugly but I would suggest possibly even illegal. Those who keep claiming an untruth after it has been shown to be that do everybody a disservice.

It’s always been that way. The most benign comment can elicit someone’s wrath and indignation.

Heirloom seeds? Yeah, touchy subject.

Wow. You buy into the “your vote counts” crap. That might work for the local board of selectmen, but not nationally.

It is a country full of lemmings. I is all the same beer, just bottled in different glass.

We go through this excercise every four years. And nothing changes. Wow...who woulda figured that.

Good summary, wrong conclusion. It one of the pro amnesty, pro establishment rino candidates gets elected ,it would be business as usual for the worthless one party dictatorship politicians of DC.

Why waste a vote on someone who is democrat light, and they are all pro amnesty pro democrat.

I don’t understand why Freepers feel the need to “pick” a candidate and then trash the others trying to get their man nominated. It’s not like their single vote is.going to change the course of events. Why aren’t we accepting the process, commenting on the repercussions and going after the real enemies of American culture? I have not picked a candidate and have been much happier watching with an amused indifference.
