The Dallas Morning News on Friday endorsed Republican presidential candidate John Kasich over home-state rival Ted Cruz for the GOP nomination.
"As much as we'd like to see a Texan in the White House, we fear that Cruz's brand of politics is more about disruption than governing and threatens to take the Republican Party to a dark place," editorial members of the influential Texas newspaper wrote.
"As we've written before, continuing obstructionist paths might excite primary voters, but it won't benefit the nation or the conservative cause," they added.
Editors of the Dallas Morning News wrote that state-level public servants like Kasich "forged practical, even imaginative, ways to help their citizens lead safer, more stable and prosperous lives."
"That's a sharp contrast to what GOP presidential front-runners Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are offering," the editors wrote, referencing the candidates who won New Hampshire and Iowa, respectively.
"John Kasich of Ohio is one of those pragmatic leaders, a Republican who -- to his own present detriment, perhaps, but to the benefit of his constituents -- shows more interest in actually governing than in partisan theatrics," the newspaper added.
The Morning News editorial board praised Kasich's "get things done" bona fides in Ohio, mentioning closing a budget shortfall and overseeing a sharp drop in unemployment, as well as his efforts in Congress to balance the federal budget. They also credited his moderate positions on immigration and Medicaid.
"While other GOP establishment opponents, for instance former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, have rewritten parts of their résumés, the center-right Kasich hasn't been cowed by the farthest-right reaches of the party into doing anything of the sort," the editorial reads.
Texas holds its primary March 1.

Yes, and the Austin and San Antonio papers. The people of Texas know better. When I say the people of Texas, I mean the people of Texas that still remember that Texas is not what the major cities have become. Thank God I had the good sense to move the hell out of that mess many years ago.
The DMN would consider Graham much too hard line on immigration. The fact that they won’t endorse Cruz is as about as shocking as a daily sunrise.
You can be pretty darn sure that once we’re into the general, they won’t be endorsing Kasich.
When Weicker was trying to push through his state income tax in Connecticut, he already had the support of the newspapers. When his “comprehensive” plan included getting rid of the tax on ink used in newspaper publishing, and exempting vending machine newspapers from sales tax, that support went into overdrive.
Dallas Morning Propaganda from a UNIPARTY rag.
This is after all the Dallas Morning News...
Sort of like thinking it is shocking the LA Times didn't endorse Cruz...
Oh, that’s got to hurt.
I think Texas is the state where Cruz has polled the best. Cruz has actually been winning the polls in Texas without any dirty tricks like Iowa. Of course he’s been losing that lead, down from +15 to +5, and this isn’t going to help him.
——Cruz’s brand of politics is more about disruption than governing——
Exactly...... that sentence encapsulates the race
Kasich et al will be and want to be caretakers. Cruz and Trump want to overthrow all that is Obama and McConnel and Reid. They want an end to the leftwing cultural disaster.
it turns out that that’s what America seemingly wants too
“Now major Texas newspapers are abandoning him.”
That would falsely imply that the Dallas Morning News endorsed him before, which they did not.
Bush picks up endorsements of 2 Texas newspapers
Feb 13, 2016
With a little more than two weeks before the March 1 primary in Texas, Jeb Bush
picked up the endorsements from the editorial boards at the Houston Chronicle
and the San Antonio Express-News.
Dallas Morning News is a southern version of the San Francisco Chronicle.
She has not formally endorsed any candidate. She did repeat back some favorable things her interviewer fed her about Trump, but she has endorsed nobody.
The leadership of her organization have endorsed a candidate, though.

Yeah, but you voted for ALL of them in the general election, because they're all Republicans.
Your original quote: So a commie rag endorses the farthest left Republican in the field
"commie rags" don't endorse Republicans, no matter how RINO they are.
Talk to The Hand, Fred.
You’re right. I had it backwards. The DMN flipped left after the Times-Herald folded. Many evening papers went under around that time but I could never figure why the DMN had to go left. It’s not like the citizenry changed.
Just because Kasich is more "conservative" than The Rump that doesn't make him a conservative.
Once again lib paper edorses liberal republican, big deal...
OK, Fred - I give in. I surrender.
You're wrong, and I'm right.
A Job is most important issue. Even liberals need jobs.
DMN is still very liberal.
I am intimately aware of this.
