RUSH: I have to say one thing, one more thing, one more time. I do not like -- and I've got a Reuters story: "Marco Rubio Emerges Champion of Battered Republican Establishment." Another Reuters story, headline: "Republican Cruz Calls Iowa Win a Victory for Conservative Grassroots." I do not like, speaking for myself, I don't like this idea that Marco Rubio is all of a sudden being labeled as an establishment candidate.
I know that Rubio's got the baggage of that Gang of Eight bill and I know that in many people's minds he's got the baggage of wanting to grant the current number of illegals citizenship. I understand that. But Marco Rubio is no moderate Republican centrist. I could sit here like anybody else could and try to make explanations for you for why he did the Gang of Eight. I'm not even gonna try to put words into his mouth. I don't want to be seen as making excuses. I'm just telling you, I don't see Marco Rubio as anything other than a legitimate, full-throated conservative. Nobody's pure, and nobody is ever free of making mistakes.
I know Senator Rubio. It's like I was telling you last week: I know these people. I know that Senator Rubio in the Senate... In many ways, he agrees with Cruz about things. He's worn out with the Senate. The Senate... I heard this from Allen West when he left the House. I've heard, "The incumbents, that's all they care about is being reelected. You go there to make a difference and you run into brick wall after brick wall after brick wall." I don't think... You know, Rubio, I don't think he wants to stay there 30 years to break through the wall to get a committee chairmanship or whatever.
I just don't like this idea that all of a sudden we're gonna make Rubio the establishment bad guy, as though Rubio is no different than the McCains and the Bob Doles and the Romneys and the others that have come along and been nominated by the establishment. He just isn't. He has not been talked out of his conservatism. He does not abandon it. He had the best end-of-the-evening speech of anybody last night. He had the best end-of-the-evening speech of anybody. And even the media was dazzled by the fact that he did it without a teleprompter.
They continue to be dazzled by that. (chuckling) Of course, Barack Hussein O can't do anything without a teleprompter. I just don't want to... We had three genuine Reaganites triumph last night, and Rubio did better than a lot of people thought he was gonna do -- and to me, that is very important. It is crucially important for conservatism, for Reaganism, for the future of the Republican Party. I'm just not comfortable here sitting and watching somebody end up maybe being destroyed because of a characterization of being "establishment."
Yeah, the establishment may embrace him because they hate Cruz and they're not gonna embrace Trump, and their real preferences can't get any traction. (That would be Jeb and Kasich and Christie.) So they've gotta go with somebody. But I'm never gonna be one that sees Marco Rubio as the establishment, as we talk about it every day here on this program.

so do i....
Don’t come here talking sense..............
+1
Well said.
ok now I think you must be on oxy, :) just kidding. But Rush is not establishment. Rubio is far more conservative than Romney, McCain, Dole. He is actually quite close to Cruz. Yes not happy with gang of 8 but happy with both. Take a close look, issue by issue on Rubio and Cruz. Both true conservatives.
You said it better than I could. I won’t vote for him again. I don’t care if he is the nominee. He sold me south once already. That is enough. I don’t give someone a second chance at me. It is mere foolishness and then my own fault.
Sorry, but there are three critical issues unique to this election, and the nominee must sincerely hold acceptable positions on all three. Our nominee must absolutely insist on repealing Obamacare, enforcing immigration law without any form of Amnesty, and protecting our individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms.
I'm okay with a range of abortion positions (from no federal funding to an all out effort to end abortion in the United States), since the president actually cannot do much on that issue. I'm okay with a range of ideas on the optimal size for our military. I'm okay with a lot of variation, even on the "war on drugs". I have no flexibility on Amnesty, and Rubio is as dead to me because of that one issue as he'd be if he wanted a national gun registry or to expand Obamacare.
Exactly. If we don’t have borders, we don’t have sovereignty. And if we don’t have sovereignty everything else just falls apart.
I agree with Rush. Rubio was wrong on the Gang of 8, but on just about every other issue heâs solid. Including the very unestablishment-like issues such as abortion.
Immigration is not my litmus test anyway, and if I believed in litmus tests it would be the pro-life issue anyway.
Rubio solid? He can’t even make up his mind if he is Catholic or Baptist! LOL.
Rubio is not only an amnesty pimp, but has also been coopted by McCainiac and Grahamnesty as a neocon—perpetual military action in the mohammedan hellholes. Throw in his support of government spying on its citizens and his dark side completely outweighs his good record on economic/budget issues.
What is this? I thought you posted a goodbye opus and darned us all to Hades.
To call what Marco Rubio did a “mistake” is to acknowledge that Pete Rose made a mistake when he knowingly gambled on baseball games in violation of Baseball’s rules. Rubio didn’t make a mistake, he made a calculated decision he could sell a bad piece of legislation no one else could sell, and he failed. How can I believe anything he says when he has shown he will eagerly cast aside his promises to serve his crony corporate donors?
You moved it to "FRONTPAGE," and I agreed with that because, frankly, what could be more "Front Page" news for this website than Rush Limbaugh sticking up for a candidate like Marco Rubio.
You have now removed it from there and also from "NEWS/CURRENT EVENTS" (where Limbaugh threads are also typically to be found) and I wonder whether you are overstepping your bounds and editorializing content on this site, rather than policing offenders and removing frivolous content.
So what gives?
Would you prefer to bury this thread so that FReepers can not read it for themselves and make up their own minds?
I remember when Rush told us how conservative George Bush was! Listened to him then, not again!
Re #173, Rubio will not cave!
Because he is a moderate/open border/blow up the middle east McCain/Graham shill.
Come on people, he’s a smooth talking con artist.
Rush’s lips have been glued to Rubio’s backside for years.
Guess he likes the life story Rube has been peddling.
It’s painful to admit how many of us were suckered by him. He was one hell of salesman. I still believe much of his campaign was real, but he just didn’t have the conviction of maturity. Like the plant in Matthew 13:
“...immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.”
I guess time will tell.
If Rubio continues to do well in the next few races, you will begin to see the GOP-e start sending consultants and bags of money to help Rubio out.
Will he take it .. Hope not.
Rubio has learned nothing except maybe he has to learn to lie better.
He is still for amnesty and has said he will keep Obama’s illegal amnesty executive order in place.
