I said two days ago, Cruz could gain some points by saying “Don has been pretty mean to me, but right is right, and this so-called ‘debate’ is a setup to slam one Republican after another, so I won’t attend either.”

Good guess. This would be a great move for Fiorina particularly. Whomever gets up and shares the stage with Trump is going to look very vice presidential.
I'd bet Carson is one of them. The debate format isn't good for him and he'd benefit more from attaching himself to Trump than he does presenting himself to the public in the debate.
The second one? I'm not sure, but I'd bet it would be somebody hoping for a cabinet position. Santorum? Hucckabee? Fiorina?

Exactly. The GOPe did not want to upset the applecart, even though it was headed for the precipice, because they were fat and happy with the scraps from the Dem table.
Trump says “I won’t play your stupid “you win/I lose” games, and upsets the applecart.
It would be amazing if Cruz skipped the debate.

trump was never ever going to pick cruz. that was an absurdity in thinking.
Cruz was supposed to say “gee shucks i’m not gonna win the primary so i better be nice to trump so i can be VP.”
