Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is slamming Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz for attacking âNew York values" and praising GOP rival Donald Trump for defending his home state.
"I'm a Democrat, but Donald Trump did a very good job defending New York," Schumer told host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable" on New York's AM-970 on Sunday.
"I'd like Ted Cruz to go talk about New York values to the firefighters who rushed to the towers on 9/11, and the police and EMTs, to the brave New York police officers who keep our streets safe," he added.
Schumer also noted that Cruz's wife worked for Goldman Sachs.
"Maybe he wants to go to Wall Street and talk about New York values, you know, where his wife worked," Schumer said.
After Cruz attacked Trump this week for representing "New York values," Trump defended himself at Thursday's GOP presidential debate by invoking the city's response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
"I think [Cruz] hurt himself and he deserved to, and Trump, gotta give him credit, was right on the money in his response," Schumer said.
Schumer also referred to a New York Daily News front page showing the Statue of Liberty giving Cruz the middle finger.
"He will be now forever on the front page of the Daily News memorialized, because they had the Statue of Liberty, and she made a gesture in Cruz's direction," Schumer said.
As for the Senate, Schumer touted the body's bipartisan work in December, including passage of a transportation bill. Schumer said the work would be a sign of a productive year ahead.
"I think things are going to be a little better in the next 12 months," he said.

“Heâs going to get those people who were once defined as Reagan Democrats”
So?
They’re still Democrats which means they will oppose any much needed cuts in Social programs
They are rallying around him just the way they will if he is elected President
Wait and see. The NewYawk Values Man is a wolf in sheep's clothing who will promise you the world and deliver squat but only more debt.
Trump definitely won in a wasteland that will never vote Republican again. Cruz will win where Republicans can and do win.
I’ll take that trade any day. The smart New Yorkers, like the smart ones in California and Illinois and so on understand. The not so smart ones? Well, we see their pathetic posts.
True fact: One of the “rewards” during The Apprentice was a flight from New York to Washington to have lunch with Chucky Schmuck. That and the reward of a night at the Playboy Mansion (won by an all-female team and did not go over very well) were my clues that Trump isn’t as conservative as he presently postures to be.
No one really believes that Cruz mocked the NY response during 9-11, nor did Trump expect anyone to believe it.
He has an aggressive way of putting people on the defensive. It’s a verbal tactic, and I suspect a cultural thing, not an intention to slander. I’ve run into it countless times in my life even here in south Virginia. Irritating, but you get used to it in New York.
Trump could have said it better, but his point was that he is proud of his great city’s finest hour, and he will take anyone to task who ridicules it.
Here’s my take. My mom was a New Yorker from way back, so I’d like a little input from someone closer to the great city ...

Talking about right and wrong is never bad.

“Heâs brilliant, and great. Did I mention heâs great? Greatest evah. Heâll make American greater than evah. You know heâs from New Yawk. Greatest evah. And smart. You know heâs smart, right? He will make America smart again. Smartest evah. And great. And winning. Youâll be sick of winning. Just like his polls, over 1000% now. Everyone loves him. Heâs Trump, and heâs great. /sarcasm”
And and and he’s the next Reagan. I don’t care about his support for Universal health care, Hillary’s 2008 campaign, the BHO stimulus, assault weapons ban, ect ect.
He’s gonna built that wall and make the Mexicans built it. Yayyyyyy!!!
are you talking about his praise of Kasich or Scott Brown??????????
sorry, Jeb was going nowhere period. I’ll give Trump credit for smacking PC back a couple decades....and for showing how to handle the media.....but sorry, Jeb was a no go from day one.
Oh, more of that compromising like the Cuban from Florida and the Gang of 8. Yeah, not one thread of Conservatism here just more COMPROMISING with the Democrats
I have to agree. I think The NewYawk Value Man will compromise with the Democrats at the drop of the hat. Like Boehner and McConnell do every day that they were leading the Congress.
no one believes you.
Your’ a seminar poster now.
‘Trump definitely won in a wasteland that will never vote Republican again. Cruz will win where Republicans can and do win. Iâll take that trade any day.’
Here’s the thing though — the back-and-forth between Trump and Cruz was good for New York. Their culture is NOT static. They will shift after this primary. By how much? No one knows.
I credit Trump with a revolution, but here’s a Cruz moment ...
The Cruz Revolution of New York politics.
Post 93 - interesting take. I don’t think I agree so much, but I respect the thought process behind it.
Scott Brown. He was standing right besides Trump when that woman asked him about Scott being his running mate, for crying out loud. What was Trump going to do, say no right then and there.
...so your point is....that the TWO endorsements of liberal Republicans in the last 36 hours are just the result of Freudian slips?
If Jim endorses Trump over Cruz, I am out of here and it will be the end of a great site. It would be a betrayal of all the conservative values he has stood for all these years. I haven’t seen it yet and don’t expect to see it. ( but I am surprised so many conservatives are worshipping at the Trump altar, just like Obama robots in 2008 )
You’re standing in front of the tent’s entrance. Kindly step out of the way so people can come in.
i respect you a lot so that makes me feel bad.
i’ve switched between the two a number of times, i’ll admit.
when someone calls out your home town, and pits it against another state, that is just wrong and it hurts.
