Donald Trump is starting the New Year on top, writes Chris Kahn, U.S. political polling editor for Thomson Reuters. Trump continues to dominate the Republican field for the presidential nomination and is now pulling even with Hillary Clinton in support among all voters.
In a hypothetical head-to-head race, the real-estate tycoon and TV personality would be supported by 39 percent of likely general election voters, compared with 40 percent for Clinton, according to the latest 5-day average from Fridayâs Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll.
The poll asked respondents who theyâd pick if the 2016 presidential election was held between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.
The answers: â¢Clinton: 40% â¢Trump: 39% â¢Other/Wouldnât vote: 21%
5-day average of 1,336 likely general election voters.
The poll has a credibility interval of 3 percentage points, which means that Trump and Clinton are in a statistical dead heat.
Reuters started asking the Clinton-Trump matchup question last month as both firmed up support within their parties. Clinton has maintained a lead over Trump for the past few weeks, though the difference has narrowed since the start of the year.
Itâs important to note that the November election is still far away in the minds of the American voter. Many are still getting to know the candidates, and it may be months before they settle on a choice for the White House.
Nationally, Trump currently leads with 41 percent support among Republican voters â more than double the support of Cruz, his nearest challenger, at 16 percent.

Not a trump fan, but “its a tie” is liberal mediaspeak for “the republican is way ahead of the democrat”
I believe *Bill’s ugliness* and her reaction to that whole phase will bring her down.
So he does worst of the GOP top three vs. Clinton. Got it.
Is that Uncle Joe warming up in the bullpen?
Trump’s point about her not having the stamina maybe more accurate than most believe. Just wait until he focuses on her. It’s gonna be a long August to November.
This is good news. Everyone in America is familiar with Hillary and have their minds made up regarding her. She can only garner 40%. That includes 100% of the famous Romney 48%.
As people come to know Trump and Cruz better, their numbers will inevitably climb steeply?
Will it be enough to overcome fraud, the Dim Machine and all the low information Dim voters? We’ll see. Boys, it’s gonna be close.
Oldplayer
When 1st place is at least 25 points ahead of everyone else, it is not called “top three” it is “top one and the rest”.
Bull.
Trump wins in a landslide or not at all! It will not be close.
Uncle Joe? No, that would be Aunt Michelle O warming up. She wins hands down.
After listening to Brett Baier, on Fox and Friends, earlier, it sounds like the noose may be tightening around Hil’s neck

Here is something weird about Reuters ...
Working-Class Hero: Trump Expands To 20-Point Lead Among White Blue-Collars Vs. Hillary Clinton
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3382132/posts
New polling data from Reuters finds a nationwide toss-up 2016 contest between GOP frontrunner Donald Trump and Democrat frontrunner Hillary Clinton - but he’s beating her by 20 points, 46 percent to 26 percent, among white working-class voters.
*******
How does that even make sense? If he strips away that much of the blue collar working class and he’s a ‘white, evil rich man beating up a liberal/progressive woman’ — how do they tie?
Good morning fellow freepers and great news for Trump.
Also ... according to a Fox poll, Trump has surged 14% against Hillary since december.
So if they’re now tied, then ‘she in big trouble’.
But ... I hope her stinking political corpse can be held up. In the primary boxing ring, he should stand on her feet to keep her from falling until the primary bell rings.
DING DING DING WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!
“It’s a tie” more like “it’s a lie” am I right?
The MSM is sickening and disgusting. I’m so happy that if they ever get their wish, they’ll be the first ones up against the wall.
I want Hillary to have to work against Bernie to get the nomination. Actually WORK! Then when she’s nice and worn out and needing to beg even harder for donor money, she steps in the big ring with Trump.
SWEETNESS!
NOT a good indicator.
If 40% of voters still support the witch, our nation is truly not far from national suicide........
But then, look at the majority that put O back in office for a 2nd term.......
Either we end the autocratic rule of Marxists, or we are toast.......
Particularly, I'd like to see how the race looks (very early, I know) in purple and blue states. My gut tells me that Trump might look pretty good in some Midwest states that D's normally carry.
Also, there has been some speculation about New York; I'd like to see some numbers.
