Donald Trump attacked Ted Cruz for not supporting ethanol subsidies. He said in Iowa on Friday, "Oil companies give him a lot of money, so he's for oil."
The thing about oil and gas is, it doesn't require big subsidies, because it's the cheapest and most efficient form of fuel for cars. Ethanol, on the other hand, does require big government subsidies, because it is highly uneconomical. Ethanol is much more expensive than oil and gas and, gallon for gallon, produces much less energy than gasoline. That's why the government has to hand over billions in subsidies to big agri-businesses to keep it going. And that's also why the government has to force oil companies to blend ethanol in with their fuels. Because without government coercion, oil companies wouldn't do it, and the price of gasoline would be substantially lower than it is now.
Additionally, ethanol actually acts as a corrosive on car engines. It slowly degrades car parts over time.
But the worst thing about ethanol is that not only does it require taxpayer subsidies, and not only does it raise the price of blended gas, but it also raises the price of many different kinds of foods. Ethanol is made with corn - a lot of it. And when a lot of corn production is diverted to ethanol, there is less corn available to use for food. Corn is heavily used as a sweetener in many food products. By raising the price of corn, the price of many different kinds of foods are raised.
That is what subsidizing ethanol gives us. That is what Donald Trump is for and Ted Cruz is against. Ted Cruz is starting to lead in some Iowa polls, and he's doing it without this kind of pandering...

I’m actually thinking of downsizing the primary process and making it random. One random county could nominate someone — a truly door-to-door and town hall primary. Then another county nominates someone else. The two small primary winners then campaign nationally against each other.
In fairness, the whole Walker family looks much happier today than they did a few months ago.
Nice picture. Thank you.
How many barrels of oil to we import every year? How much money does that cost us?
“cage match on” ... nope ... Cruz and Trump don’t want to help Rove-Bush-Kasisch ...
Have you read any of the 8 books Trump has written? Long before he decided to enter the race he was worried about the road our country was travelling. Yes, he gave money to the democrats, that’s what big business does. But he’s running full bore as a Republican now. He wants America to be America we grew up in.
Cruz is right on ethanol. Trump is wrong on ethanol.
While I support Trump, I really hate ethanol subsidies and MANDATES.

Most importantly, it is a sham that artificially raises gas prices and strains the food supply ...

“...A 2008 study published in Science magazine found that corn-based ethanol increases greenhouse gas emissions instead of reducing them. A 2009 study concluded that plowing fields to grow corn for ethanol could release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than ethanol offsets...”

There have been a lot of old-car fires lately ... Here’s one reason: The ethanol in modern gasolineâabout 10 percent in many statesâis so corrosive, it eats through either the fuel-pump diaphragm, old rubber fuel lines or a pot metal part, then leaks out on a hot engine ⦠and ka-bloooooie!!! [snip]
Ethanol will absorb water from ambient air. In a modern vehicle, with a sealed fuel system, ethanol fuel has a harder time picking up water from the air. But in a vintage car, the water content of fuel can rise, causing corrosion and inhibiting combustion. [snip]

“... it shouldn’t be Washington picking winners and losers ... corporate welfare ...”
We are freaking doomed because of all the idiots ...
Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
We need to ensure we don't get another Obama-like America Hater as the next President.
The best way to ensure that is to actively support a candidate as the next President.
I prefer Cruz and my money goes to his campaign, hence the Cruz link. If you like someone else, donate to him/her (find your own link to do it) and if you use FR and don't donate, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches or those who have Obama Phones because, functionally, you are no different than any other FReeloader
PS - If you are one of those who cannot afford even a small donation to FR or a candidate, God Bless and happy FReeping!.....
GO CRUZ!! Keep it up Trump!!
Well......lol...I can't argue with that. On average I buy one new imported gas powered device every year because the old (still new) one has crapped out due to fuel system damage caused entirely by..............wait for it............ethanol!
I also, on average, replace one imported fuel pump on one or more of my vehicles every three years because of.........yes you guessed it.....Ethanol.
So I am doing best to add dollars to our imports, thus contributing along with many others to the very same trade deficit at least enough to compensate any fuel savings.
No, it is not reality. Cruz has told and campaigned as such in Iowa since the beginning and his support there has done nothing but increased.
The subsidy has to stop, just like the windmill subsidy has to stop.
Trump spoke tonight in Des Moines, IA
I watched the entire speech.
He said Cruz was against ethanol and he, Trump, was not.
He was taking questions from the audience and when asked about it he said he guessed it was because Cruz was from an oil state, texas, and was somewhat beholding to big oil because they donate to his campaign.
In another question he was asked if there were a place for Cruz either on his ticket or with the SC as a justice.
Trump replied that he liked Cruz a lot and that if he, Trump, were elected there would definitely be a high place for Cruz. He made a few more complimentary comments also.
My point: If you didnt watch the entire speech and the Q&A then youre simply responding to an article designed to pit Trump against Cruz and that IS NOT what went down.
I think you are missing the point here, VideoDoctor. The point of these posts by Cincinatus Wife is to smear Trump.
Please dont get in the way. She has a job to do. Shes getting paid big bucks to do it and none of us have the right to interfere with her extra income.
Fuel ethanol production subsidizes pork and chicken production, which are big export items. For every pound of ethanol produced, there is about a pound of high-protein animal feed. There’s also about a pound of CO2. Ethanol is more embedded in ag and the larger economy than most understand. That’s partly why it is such an intractable problem.
The hell it does!
That feed is played out...it’s just filler, no energy left.
Why do you think Beef, Pork, and Poultry prices have doubled in the last few years and with the new mandate of 15% mix, will continue to rise.
Not to mention feeds for all kinds of domestic animals and I still have not addressed human food.
Any society that essentially burns it’s own food by converting it to a fuel is not likely long for this world and definitely long in the tooth as they say. It’s suicidal idiocy.
I have not even addressed the fact that it’s less efficient and therefore makes less power, creates more heat due to increased throttle, this makes more emissions, increased engine wear and increased costs.
Ethanol has screwed up the entire supply chain. Food costs are higher across the board and the only input to cause it was the price of corn.
I think it should be made optional and a consumer choice, then we will see just how popular and needed it is.
“Not a lot of evangelicals come out of Cuba in all fairness it’s true. Not a lot come out, but I like him nevertheless, “Trump said.”
What is Trump trying to accomplish with that statement?
That was a great summary of the ethanol scam.
Where’s Giuliani on ethanol subsidies?
That statement proves just how empty headed Trump is.
Cruz has said repeatedly that he does not support ANY subsidies, not oil, not sugar, not ethanol. He says the government should not be in the business of picking winners and losers. Let the Free Market work.
