It sounds close to the lead-from-behind approach adopted by the Obama Administration for Libya: air strikes but no troops, a de facto alliance with moderate local forces to do the ground fighting, and no follow-up. The approach at least succeeded in ending the Gadhafi regime, but it failed as a policy because the U.S. and NATO abandonment of Libya after Gadhafi’s fall allowed jihadist groups to flourish as the country descended into chaos. If anyone hasn’t learned the lessons of Libya, it’s Mr. Cruz.

Total nonsense. Cruz does not have a problem, but she might.
FWIW a lot of us here on FR got a whole lot of lectures from Cruz supporters when we were questioning why Cruz would want to pass ANYTHING about trade while Obama is in office.
Everything I have seen indicates Cruz is considering his possible positions. Unfortunately this is a wicked problem, before it can be solved you first have to define multiple ill defined terms.
Syria? Is it a geographical location or a Nation? Iraq? see Syria.
Do we support anyone there? All factions we do not support will blame us for supporting the other guy. Factions we could support range from the problematic to the bad with a few who are simply horrific.
Finding a strategy that can both work and fit on a bumper sticker seems problematic at best. (”Nuke it till it glows” is unserious)
The GOPe and its willing accomplishes in the media (note, only in the primary season) are going after Cruz before Trump. They want all the Cruz people to float to Rubio then see how hard the need to hit Trump.
Neocon queen of war Jennifer Rubin. Never has one person be so wrong about so much with so much certainty.
Right- we heard Rubio’s argument from his Pac, the WSJ, the WashPost-— they all picked it up, of course, because it was rhe Establishment’s orchestrated attack on Cruz (just as it has been placed on FR several times)-—
Result????
For the 1st time, Cruz is ahead of Rubio in NH.
Idiots! No one is going to believe Ted Cruz is “soft” on national security— no one!
Bull spit.
Storing my metadata so that IF I ever become a politician or other blackmailable figure, the establishment can comb through years of my gps and call/texting data to find a mistress or some other goods to keep me in line - has nothing to do with national security.
But they’d never do that and I should take off my tin foil hat!?
Ask the 700 people with FBI files in Hillary’s possession of they’d ever use data like that against political opponents. Hell, ask tea party orgs if the IRS would ever do something like that.
Any politician in any debate that tells me that the gov’t has to spy on ME to keep ME safe doesn’t deserve my support.
National security my crack. Establishment security more like it.
Ridiculous hit piece.
The liberal scum sucking RATS are getting nervous. Wouldn’t it be great to see Trump or Cruz sworn is at POTUS in January of ‘17?
I think Cruz is exactly correct on this. In the Middle East, especially, you have to support the lesser of two (or more) evils. Only the intervention of its military saved Egypt from the same fate that has befallen Libya and Syria. If Obama/Clinton had gotten their way, the MB would now be using Egypt as a base to launch terrorist attacks on Israel.
Except for perhaps Trump, I am not aware of any candidate who is advocating a rush to war. On the other hand, I don't expect this to be the last terrorist attack this nation is faced with in the next 14 months. I hope I'm wrong.
My point is not to bash Cruz. I think he would make a fantastic president. But, judging from your responses, each of you believes that he is a prefect candidate right now. The problem there is that the perfect candidate in November 2015, very likely won't be the same thing as the perfect candidate a year from now. Or, perhaps, a month from now. It is his right to adjust his positions, and I expect him to do so. But, make no mistake, the questions about national security will begin to be a liability for him, starting in the next week. Joe Voter hears the soundbite, and he'd better have a bag full of them. Again, I expect he will.
She is part of the DC moderate RINO brigade.
As such, she is always 50% wrong.
Drives me bonkers, just reading her stuff..
I would say that she is in the Rubio camp.. ...
The metadata and the San Bernadino terrorists is a non-starter. The FBI knew he was communicating (via phone & social media) with known terrorists/organizations. Any warrant they needed they could easily get. Collecting metadata on all Americans is wrong. Period.
Her closing paragraph tells us all we need to know about her thesis & argument:
This was not Cruz's crowd. The problem for him is that a great number of middle-of-the-road Republicans are just like them. The whole piece is wishful thinking and inartful twisting. There's no there there.
Neo-cons are starting to get nervous about Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz voted against NSA snooping into phone records of American citizens (USA Freedom Act), and many conservatives joined him in that.
Rubio, Rubin and the neo-cons think that was wrong. These are the same twerps who demand these Government powers for NSA, which invariably get abused while not actually stopping terrorism, but ALSO say we have to take refugees that are security risks.
Once again, Ted Cruz is right and attracting opposition FOR being right.
Cruz has been CORRECT on national security. You go back and watch his foreign policy speech of a few years back - it was Reaganesque and statesmanlike. he made the right call on Iran deal, on ISIS, on Putin and on Israel support.
His statements recently on Libya too have been correct. Obama intervened to support islamicist victories in Libya, and it was NOT Cruz’ approach but the Obama approach - which Rubin/McCain/Rubio endorsed btw - that led to Libya being what it is now, and which led to Benghazi. Rubin has got revisionist history going on.
It’s easy to be better than the horrible Obama, but Cruz is also better than the two extremes in the GOP - our neo-cons on one extreme and the isolationists on the other extreme. Cruz is right in the middle, focussed clearly on US national security interests, willing to fight when we need to but not willing to expend US blood and treasure when its ‘not our fight’ and focussing our efforts on maintaining US national security as #1 goal.
Yes, the neo-con wing of GOP will try to attack Cruz as not warmongering enough, but people are waking up to the fact that the simplistic interventionism isn’t right. Where it COUNTS, Cruz is tough as nails. Cruz won’t degrade ISIS but defeat them, and his gameplan is similar to how Rumsfeld and our DOD took out the taliban in 8 weeks from power in Afghanistan. It’s absurd that ISIS holds *any* ground when in fact a real US effort could defeat them in that amount of time or less.
I do.
She's one of those East Coast "economic conservatives" who can slice and dice budget issues and Paul Krugman vomitorials with the best of them, but absolutely hates Sarah Palin, border watchers, and social conservatives generally and reviles them all as Kluxers and cave men. Or, in Palin's case, a moosicidal know-nothing and illiterate from Nowheresville: Frances McDormand's character without the rustic charm and Democrat-Farmer-Labor merit badges for good intentions.
Someone analyzed Rubin's issue stands and found she is 53% conservative. She's with you on budget and debt issues, but let immigration or black racism be the issue, and she'll shank you faster than a cellblock enforcer.
Since she's Jewish, I guess that qualifies her in some people's definition of "Neoconservative" (since so many of the first "Neocons" were illuminated Jewish Trotskyites who discovered the consolations of living behind the defenses of John Foster Dulles's NATO and SEATO protected by Curtis LeMay's fleets of B-47's and B-52's), never mind that probably the biggest "Neocon" alive is Dick Cheney.
