WHO ARE YOU CALLING A HYPOCRITE?
I always chuckle a little when I must sit through someone's "sermon" on why he/she doesn't ever darken the door of a church. Invariably at the top of the list of reasons given for not attending is something about the church being so full of hypocrites. You know, those people who affect virtues and qualities they don't have ... religious fakes. The humor in this line of argument rests not so much in the fact that I never hear anything original, but rather in the facts surrounding the genesis of the word hypocrite. It was a term applied to the ancient Greek actors who wore masks in order to convey to the audience certain qualities and emotions. The actor hid behind the mask and the mask projected the necessary image. In reality, a hypocrite is anyone who wears a mask hiding the true self while projecting an image for the benefit of the "audience". As I see it, that makes us all hypocrites! We all hide behind masks pretty consistently. How often, for instance, do we observe our hurting friends struggling to keep the "coat hanger" smile in place? Yes, when two people stand eyeball-to-eyeball, it's one hypocrite starin' at another! The guy who won't go to church because it's full of hypocrites is not being completely honest. What he really means is that he prefers secular hypocrisy to religious hypocrisy. It's sort of like the smoker's preference for a particular brand of cigarettes. CDR Thomas E. Braithwaite, CHC, USN |

You are my help and my deliverer.
Psalm 40:17
C. S. Lewis and his older brother, Warren (Warnie), endured several terms at Wynyard, an English boarding school for boys. The headmaster was a cruel man who made life unbearable for everyone there. Decades later, Warnie wrote in his understated dry wit, âI am now sixty-four and a bit, and have never yet been in a situation in which I have not had the consolation of reflecting that at any rate I was better off than I was at Wynyard.â Most of us can recall a similar dark and difficult time in our lives and be grateful that weâre better off now than we were then.
Psalm 40:1-5 records a low point of Davidâs life when he cried out to the Lord who rescued him. God brought him up from âthe slimy pitâ and âthe mud and mireâ and set his feet on a rock (v. 2). âHe put a new song in my mouth,â David says, âa hymn of praise to our Godâ (v. 3).
But deliverance from depression and despair are seldom one-time events. Psalm 40 continues with Davidâs renewed plea for Godâs mercy, lovingkindness, and truth to deliver him from his own sin and the threats of his enemies (vv. 11-14).
Along with David, we can say at every low point, âI am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my delivererâ (v. 17).
How does recalling a low point in your life encourage you to trust God for His help today?
The One who holds the universe will never let you down.

Good evening, Mayor, and thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.
A Blessed Lord’s Day to The Mayor family.
Do you still have a houseful of “guests”?
I have my computer guy installing a “new” computer for my Mom. The internet cable quit working a long time ago, but we got around that with a wireless adapter. Now that won’t work. The computer seems to have died. The “new” used one is already up and connected to the internet with the cable. Set up is in progress.

My low point was dealing with sickness before FR.
Having so many FReepers (and people of a like mind) around 24/7 to take my mind off myself when the self pity kicks in is a blessing.
Just trying to keep up with the science and history stuff keeps me busy :)
Could write a small novel from what I’ve learned on this board.

Not Mac. Don’t enjoy football. - Anyway; about Church.
- We better get up off our duffs and boogie on down to an
available Christian Church. Otherwise, don’t blubber to
Twinkie when there’s a Muslim mosque on every street
corner in your town with the Muslim call to prayer (the
one that Hussein finds SO beautiful) blaring out six times
a day REAL LOUD over a loudspeaker all around your court
square in your town! - AND maybe severed heads sticking on
every parking meter also as a warning that you better come
to mosque! Or else!

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

Evening Kathy!
Finally home today after a lovely Thanksgiving and visit with Sister and family.
I had lunch with both kids today and then took daughter to the gun range to try out the new 'toy' she's getting for Christmas. Her first time shooting, it was an experience for her. BTW, she approves of Dad's present :-)
Winding down now after not too much sleep the last few days.
You have a good Thanksgiving?

I watched the Alabama - Auburn game - was hoping for a better result, but still a good game.
A restful day - I had the opportunity to raise my glass early this afternoon with a Marine and Army Brother who is also a Canteener well known to you. It was a golden moment - he met John-Man and Daniel as well.

This is the Arabic character "nun" ~ the first letter of the word "Nazarene." I post it as my avatar in solidarity with people of all faiths suffering persecution at the hands of Islam. Many of them are members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, dating from the days of the Apostles. They endure cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors they, and we, are all "Nazarenes." |
