TOKYO (AFP) -

Japan scrambled jets after 11 Chinese military planes flew near southern Japanese islands during what Beijing said was a drill to improve its long-range combat abilities, reports said Saturday.

The planes -- eight bombers, two intelligence gathering planes and one early-warning aircraft -- flew near Miyako and Okinawa on Friday without violating Japan's airspace, the Japanese defence ministry said in a statement released on Friday.

Some of them flew between the two islands while others made flights close to neighbouring islands, the ministry said.

A Chinese air force spokesman said several types of planes, including H-6K bombers, were involved in Friday's drill over the western Pacific, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

Shen Jinke said such open sea exercises had improved the force's long-distance combat abilities, according to Xinhua.

Okinawa is a long way out to send 11 H-6 bombers...without any air cover...and against the Japanese F-15's.

The Japanese pilots surely knew they were coming as they finished their tea before takeoff.

too much military hardware out there, too much animosity, too much need for oil (even if it has receded lately).

too many insane muslims.

Already a Russian jet has been shot down and the pilots killed. Putin wont let that slide. Not in a million years.

one more incident and we might be on our way to the third world war.

I hope not.

Oh, goody. World War IV in all corners of the globe. That’s really all it takes, a big one somewhere and others see their chance to move because the world hates to split their armed resources.

On a more serious note, somebody at FR that lives in Japan said earlier this year some of the news reports from there were really scary. I can’t remember the thread, though. I think it was about the fishing thing.

I think it was about the fishing thing.

You may be onto something here. Everyone thinks a world war can be sparked by the need for oil. Well okay, a war machine needs oil. But what if hostilities begin over something as simple as a clash of fishing trawlers? If hostilities break out, food is going to get scarce real quick for millions of people around the Pacific Rim, because they rely on fishing on a large scale in the Pacific Ocean. The Chinese and others have clashed over territorial claims for fishing. A trawler sunk or shot up by a hostile military vessel may lead to a larger war, leading to shortages of seafood and panic in Asian cities.

“...Putin wont let that slide. Not in a million years...”

Putin let the Beslan School massacre slide. Now one of his top executives is a Chechen. Oil money, both Russian and Arab, drives the completely corrupt Putin.

I always have said big wars begin over economic issues, generally.

Obviously it’s not a hard and fast rule.

Isn't he a Chinese military guy, nothing about this on the news.

(Or from Barry, he's still in the dog house for getting caught trying to sneak in a pizza)

[I told the guy on the phone, use the rear entrance, the one I make Netanyahu use, and wear something that I'd recognize]

Putin let the Beslan School massacre slide.

Not true. Putin took one of the leaders in Beslan alive, interrogated them with enhanced techniques, and has ruthlessly hunted down every single terrorist in his power, and not caught another one alive.

Thousands of Chechens renounced being a Chechen two days after the attack, by showing up in Red Square and stomping on the Chechen flag.

Putin put the survivors, and the ones at the theater in Lubyanka. They suffered worse in there than anyone can imagine. That place was KGB and now FSB HQ. And the torture done there is long, slow, and lone.

"...and against the Japanese F-15's."

Not just Japanese aircraft - we've got about 75 F-15s on Okinawa ourselves, along with hefty air-defense assets.

China has long been the Neighborhood Bully of Asia.

Ironically, they still insist on p*ssing and moaning about what Japan did in WWII.

I thought Obam had the Pentagon do a “pivot to Asia” starting a few years ago to meet this threat. No? Oh, just another lie.

So are we..nothing wrong with that.

(The Japs are damn lucky that the Chinese have shown restraint all these years).

‘’Military fleet flies’’. Wow.Flying ships?. What will those Chinks think of next? Don’t they mean ‘’flight of aircraft’’? It’s my understanding that a ‘’fleet’’ refers to ships. Doesn’t anyone in the media understand the English language anymore?

Agree. Fishing rights are very hotly contested everywhere. Usually it’s settled peacefully, but sometimes it comes to blows.

The Japanese are very much a force to be reckoned with.

Luck had nothing to do with it.

Good. I hope the Japanese shoot down one of the Chinese aircraft for violating their airspace. And I hope the Phillipines sink one of those islands in the Spartlies.
