How alarmed were New Jersey officials by reports of Muslims dancing in the streets of Jersey City and Paterson on Sept. 11, 2001, to celebrate the destruction of the World Trade Center?
They feared riots would break out and were ready to send in the National Guard and the State Police to preserve order.
But John J. Farmer Jr., then the New Jersey attorney general and the state's chief law enforcement officer, said on Tuesday that he ordered an investigation that very day and found the reports to be bogus, more wild stories born in the stricken hours after the attacks.
Nevertheless, those ancient, false rumors were recycled as truth over the weekend by Donald J. Trump, who has folded them into his calls for the national registration of Muslims and possible closing of mosques.
Reporters were unable to find any evidence for his story, but Mr. Trump stuck with it in a television interview on Sunday. "It did happen," he said. "I saw it. It was on television."
Few people, if any, could address the circumstances more definitively than Mr. Farmer, who went on to serve as senior counsel to the Sept. 11 commission.

A good place to look is all the news sites from the days right after...
There were thousands of Muslims celebrating around the world, just not thousands in New Jersey.
Maybe they were in one of the other 57 states that Obama visited but that the NY Slimes never saw fit to definitively debunk.
Democrat politicians covering the a*sses of other Democrat politicians.
Yeah, a “definitive debunking” allright.
I would search the Letters to the Editor for any evidence of the claim. Just because the reporters skip out on their job doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
TDS
I recall those images too, but I also seem to recall them being from the Middle East. While I am sure there was celebration in parts of the U.S., Trump’s hyperbolic ‘thousands’ claim was a mistake that makes him look a bit silly. And I am a Trump supporter.
RE: Funny, I distinctly remember seeing the films.
In New Jersey? I tried finding in YouTube but could not find any other than what a CNN investigator said to Anderson Cooper in an interview.
Did the media scrub them all clean?
RE: a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating
The only issue I have with the above statement is the word “allegedly”.
I believe that many Muslims around the world celebrated and I don’t think any unbiased person can deny that.
The issue the Times and the liberal media keep bringing up is the Trump claim that he saw it in New Jersey.
I have no idea where they are now. They seem quite conveniently to have vanished. However, my memory is not faulty. I saw them.
But Trump said he saw television footage of thousands of Muslims celebrating 911 in New Jersey. Such footage apparently never aired and does not exist.
Its not that big a deal. I live in NJ and remember hearing such rumors too. A lot of people including Trump are apparently combining the footage from the West Bank and gaza with the rumors about Paterson (similar looking for sure).
Trump could just admit as much and the story would wrap up harmlessly, but he's going to keep insisting he was right because that's his style. And his believers cling to his myth of infallibility.
Check the numerous '9/11 as it happened' discussions on this very site.
Exactly. Only rumors about New Jersey, never substantiated, and no eyewitnesses ever testified, but ample video from Obama’s friends in the West Bank and Gaza.
RE: I would search the Letters to the Editor for any evidence of the claim.
On the radio talk shows broadcast here in New York, a whole hour was devoted to the so called 9/11 celebrations in NJ.
A lot of people (especially those living in Paterson, NJ ) called in to describe their own eyewitness accounts.
But then the media can always dismiss this as Islamophobia.
So, the Letters to the Editor would not be considered good evidence at all. The media will insist on a more stringent evidence — PRODUCE THE VIDEO.
The bigger point here that the left does not want to acknowledge is that there is substantial support for Islamic terrorism among U.S. Muslims. Pew has done several polls on this. If I recall correctly, somewhere between one-quarter to one-third of U.S. Muslims support terrorist organizations. A substantial number also support Sharia.
The leftist media won’t touch this topic — at least not honestly.
So at the very best, it is inconclusive, non story.
On the other hand, I saw muslim’s cheering on TV.
So, Trump is right.
