Johnny Manziel Demoted to Third String After Partying Video Surfaces

Johnny Manziel lost his starting spot after cameras caught the quarterback partying during his bye week.

Browns coach Mike Pettine called the behavior, which comes after an offseason trip to rehab, “disappointing” and “frustrating.”

Manziel’s bye-week carousing spoils his national coming-out party previously scheduled for Monday night’s game against the banged-up Baltimore Ravens. Pettine announced on Tuesday Josh McCown will start the game at quarterback.

TMZ spotted Manziel on Thursday at the RIO Rooftop & Restaurant nightclub in Austin, where he partied the evening away with friends. The Summit Rooftop Lounge, where he spent the evening boozing on champagne, served as Friday’s spot.

Two Sundays ago Manziel threw 33 completions for 342 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Steelers. After TMZ videos surfaced showing the Heisman Trophy-winner drinking, dancing, and carrying on, the Browns reevaluated Monday night’s game plan. ESPN reported earlier that Pettine was “not in position yet” to make a final decision on his choice for quarterback. However, after taking into consideration Manziel’s unprofessional conduct he demoted the 2014 first-round pick to the third string.

Pettine stated, “The improvements from last year to this year have been tremendous but he still has to consistently demonstrate that he has gained a good understanding of what it takes to be successful at the quarterback position on this level. It goes well beyond the field. We are going to continue to support him in every way possible, but at this point, we’ve decided it’s best to go with Josh as the starter going forward.”

Is there a single rehab program that isn’t worthless?

“If you had an employer who is in full public view like the NFL so much, there is little doubt that these sideline events are a negative on its income-generation, and you would have had a contract that causes you to limit this type of thing.”

Right!!!!!! Let’s see, we have had rarest allowed to play (Rothelsberger, Irvin), murderers (Lewis), a bunch of wife/girlfriend abusers,................ How has that hurt the NFL again? What was in those players contracts? The NFL does not care what these thugs do. They wish they would just do it off camera.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Johnny’s past actions have placed him on a really short leash. He is famous for “pushing the envelope” both on the field and off.

The Browns are out of the playoffs and used a first round pick on him. MCCown isn’t the future and they need to play Manziel the rest of the way to see what they have. It’s been obvious that Pettine never wanted to start Manziel since he arrived in Cleveland and will keep Manzeil on the bench even if it cost him games so it’s personal. Is Manziel a drunk? Yes. Is he a jackass? Yes. Do you play him out from here on out to evaluate him before you work your draft board? Yes.Do you let Pettine go after the season since he can’t coach at the NFL level? Yes. If Manzeil can’t play they need to know by putting him in actual games since it doesn’t matter this season. The coach staff is horrible I hate to blow it up again but well it can’t get any better with this crew.

My local team had a choice in last year’s draft for QB and chose the problem child. He has improved in his performance but I am holding my breath for his future behavior. No kudos for guessing where I live, and boy do I miss Coach Dungy!

At one point Layne’s team was so bad he was joking about having a stiff drink at halftime.

Substitutions are the big thing.
Used to be the eleven best players took the field and stayed there.
Now there are players who only play on certain downs and certain situations.
Third and long is a glaring example.

Fatso Donovan told the joke about Gino Marchetti asking him, at the line, “what defense we in! Fatso, what defense we I’m? “
Donovan answered “the same damned defense we been playing the last seven years!”.

He doesn’t care about the money and that’s the problem.

The NFL doesn’t have the hold on Manziel that they do on most players: wealth.

Manziel’s grandfather made an oil deal worth $100 million. Johnny doesn’t need the NFL to be “rich”.

Neither Snake or Namath had easy childhoods.

Namath grew up in coal country so you know his childhood was tough.

Stabler had an alcoholic father who was with the family most of the time. When he was there he was basically AWOL.
He told about dragging his dad out of bars and dives when he was a teenager.
His dad did sober up later in life but Kenny didn’t really have a father until he was grown.
He admitted the reason he and Al Davis had a strained relationship 6was that he was looking for Al to be a father figure, something Al didn’t do.

By the time they got to the NFL Snake and Namath had one good knee between them.
They played with pain that would put most modern QBs on the IR list.
Try to imagine Tom Brady playing with Namath’s knee problems.
We would be saying Tom who?

And Namath and Snake both knew how to play hard in the fourth quarter

Summary of Patriots scouting report on Manziel:

Will never take football seriously enough for our coaching staff, he’ll hate meetings, will have to drag him to work out, etc. The definition of the word maintenance.

Actually they’ve been pretty public about the terms. He has problems with partying, both sides have admitted he has problems with partying, he spent time in rehab this off season. The team has praised him for improved behavior. But the behavior seems to be backsliding. He got in an issue on the freeway a couple of weeks ago and now this. And the team has stated they are disappointed and they’re dropping him to 3rd on the depth chart. No presumption there, that’s all from clearly made statements.

When it comes to QBs, it's not the first contract that can kill a team, it's the second. Manziel will never see the big payday.

The law of supply and demand. There is such a short supply of proficient QBs, that's why the good/great ones can swallow up to 20% of a team's salary cap.

Often times it’s the draft, luckily for the Brown I don’t think they gave up much to get him. It is looking like Johnny is going to have a short inexpensive career.

“I nominate John Madden as their head coach.”

I think Pat Summerall could make the team. He played for Betty Ford.

Other members of the All BUZZED Team shoud (sic) include:Paul Hornung...

No!

Say it ain't true!

He broke my heart, when, as a young 10 year old kid, I heard of his gambling, horse race carousing, drinking, associating with "suspicious" characters, etc.

I forgave him, though and he's still at the top of my personal All-Time Greats List.

(But what do I know...Sonny Jurgenson is on that list, too.)
