TURKISH warplanes have shot down a Russian jet which they claim flew into the country's airspace. The aircraft was shot down after it was warned 10 times in five minutes to leave Turkish airspace, a Turkish military official has said.
It was just over the Syrian border in Turkey when it was downed by F16 Fighting Falcon jets belonging to Turkey, the official added.
But Russian President Vladimir Putin said the plane was 4km into Syria and had not violated Turkey's airspace as it flew at an altitude of 6,000 metres - and claimed it was shot down from the ground not the air.
NATO has announced it will be holding an extraordinary session at 4pm GMT after Turkey requested it following the incident.

Whoa....Laz, in St Petersburg, as a Russian troll? Now I’m actually less interested in the dispute in the middle east and more fascinated to see what happens to you for violating the airspace of Lazonia. Noob.

‘Shooting down of jet could be game changer for Russia and Turkey’
Sukhoi-24 are deep air interdiction tactical bombers. They are mainly used in aheavy ground bombardment. Who was it bombing? The Turkmen fighters [Syrian Turkmen Army], who are ethnic Turks fighting against the Syrian regime with Turkey’s backing. We are talking about 5,000-9,000 Turkish-speaking fighters. They were under heavy attack by the Syrian forces who have been supported by the Russians and Iranians for a long time. There has been some frustration in Turkey about that.
One reason is that following the Paris attacks and due to the talks between the US and Turkey during the G-20 summit in Antalya, Ankara and Washington were discussing the prospects of an enhanced and intensified joint air operation over Syria. This operation was planned, as we understand, to be in support of some anti-Assad elements on the ground in Syria, like the Free Syrian Army and Turkmen forces. In return, the Syrians, Russians and Iranians moved against the Turkmen forces on the ground, as a “proxy punishment” against Turkey. The Russian aircraft was flying to bomb Turkmen forces.

Noob my aft section. We’ve gone around this tree countless times before. If he wants to act like a propagandist and disinformation agent for Putin and his gang...I’ll treat him like one no matter what bolt hole he is in.
You are an idiot.
I specifically called Putin a tinhorn dictator.
Only an idiot would miss that.
Idiot.
And like I wrote, it’s madness to screw around with a dictator who has nuclear weapons.
And as far as escorting people out of your airspace, it’s been done for decades.
Idiot.
“And like I wrote, itâs madness to screw around with a dictator who has nuclear weapons.”
Obama is a dictator who has control of nuclear weapons,, yet you seem to find nothing wrong with Putin screwing around with Obama.
“And as far as escorting people out of your airspace, itâs been done for decades.”
Of course they have, and the ADC pilots I briefed had rules of engagement they were required to follow. Any unidentified fighter/fighter bomber conducting hostile combat operations, refusing to comply with international law and international protocols, and targeting their aircraft with targeting radar lock-ons were dead meat. Those who complied with the laws and protocols were escorted as you describe. The Russians broke the rules and paid the price. Putin is doing this deliberately in an attempt to divide the NATO allies in advance of his planned resumption of offensive combat operations in the Ukraine.
Ten to one our CAC (Chicken and Chief) will say; “Article 5 says that the response may include armed force, but it does not mandate it.”
I don’t. I despise ISIS and I despise Putin’s bullying and empire building. I also despise Obama. You don’t have to only oppose one or the other. I’m pro-American and in favor of human liberty.
You’ve made clear many times which side you favor.
Well try not to get hysterical as Russia kills more savage Muslims. It’s a good thing.
Well, if they’re killing ISIS, then fine. If they’re just killing Muslims, like they did in Afghanistan, just to impose a Russian empire, I’m not for that. I’m not for genocide. Call me a non supporter of Russian mass murdering if you must, but I’m not with you on that one.
I think the more pertinent question is, not who is there, but how many have their clothes on.
If you don’t understand the difference between killing people and pointing your radar at them, then you’re an even bigger idiot than I thought.
I never said that you did. The fact is that you hate the Russians more than the terrorist muslims.
There is a big difference between Putin and the Russians. One can hope the Russians will begin to love liberty more than empire. Putin is an ex-KGB Colonel and an arch criminal who hijacked Russia’s efforts at democracy. He runs Russia for his personal benefit. ISIS is beyond the pale and deserves to be wiped out with severe effective and extreme violence.
Except Putin is not God and neither was Genghis Khan.
“If you donât understand the difference between killing people and pointing your radar at them, then youâre an even bigger idiot than I thought.”
Pointing a search radar is one thing, using the weaponry targeting radar to obtain a lock-on required to launch the weapon is a hostile act requiring a defensive response. Under the circumstances the defensive response is to fire your weapon/s to destroy the target who is in the final posture needed to kill your aircraft. You are trying to serve as an apologist for the Russians, and you are doing an abysmal job of it. Any aircraft which locks-on its weaponry targeting radar is effectively declaring itself to be an immediate, clear, and present danger to the target and therefore subject to a lethal defensive response. The rules of engagement Turkey has in effect since it shot down the Syrian warplanes in 2014 is to shoot down any aircraft that makes a hostile radar lock-on.
NOT COOL. Putin has no choice but to react to this. Lets hope cooler heads put a stop to this—but it may well be too late to stop the falling dominos of war. The Kurds may well get their Kurdistan after all. Will Obama use America’s Might? Will China call in our loans and refuse to loan us more money—Put up a blockade on ships coming to USA or attack Japan? Will Obama nuke Russia in a “First Strike” ??? These are scary times and getting worse.
“Putin has no choice but to react to this.”
That’s right. Putin has no choice but to react to this by ordering his warplanes to stop targeting NATO aircraft with their weapons and avoid getting shot down again for doing so.
You are spot on. Edrogan is Turkey's obama and needs to be removed from power.
