Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Do you really believe that you are not already under the spy-glass of government? They know everything about us since the day we are born.
NOT the same thing with Trump. He has promised to build a wall, and he WILL build the wall because it is the kind of man he is. He is not a “loser.’ He is a winner by nature through intelligence and a particular gift he has for analyzing things HIMSELF. On top of that, he is wise enough to surround himself with EXPERTS, not political cronies, and we need some experts in this country RIGHT NOW to straighten out the timber and drain the swamps of the Obama administration.
I never drank cool-aid, even as a child. I do find it’s reference a childish insult slung about by people with a minimum vocabulary and lack of comprehension.
I suppose you keep up with everything DU and KOS has to say. Very telling admission on your part.
I agree!!!
Thank you. Keep up the good fight!
You’re just too slick for everyone. Trump and everyone else got conned. Soon Trump will plummet or quit and Cruz or Bush will convince everyone to support them.
Sure, that’s going to happen. Thanks for the hot tip slick.
“So how long before there will be a national registry for Christians for the government to keep tabs on them ? Because knowing the abuse of power of government this is where this will lead to. The US Constitution protects us from this sort of thing.”
Thanks for posting what I have also been saying on this thread. Some want the government to put the screws to a group of American Citizens they don’t like, even though that is against the constitution - but they can’t seem to comprehend the government having that power, can put those same screws on them also being American Citizens.
The govn. does not have your religion information. If you become the subject of an FBI investigation for some reason, and they track your comings and goings, then they would find that out if you regularly go to meetings of a religious group.
Now, you can claim they know everyone’s religion, but that is a baseless claim. Also, people change their church affiliation all the time so it would be impossible to keep up with every person's religion and millions have no church affiliation, so their supposed list of over 300 million citizens would have millions of people on it with no religion listed.
Don’t look now ... you’re the one who got conned. Cruz no more said what the headline says he said, than Trump did.
Right...
Been a Freeper here since 2004.
Other Freepers can vouch for me including Jim Robinson.
The Trump supporters who make those kinds of statements make fools of themselves.
Really ?
I guess you were not here on FR back in 2008 when we had Obama trolls here and many here on FR told them they were drinking the Obama koolaid.
Your post was a lame attempt of obvious deflection.
Go tell Jim Robinson that he is childish for telling off Obamabots back in the day of 2008 for drinking the Obama koolaid......
I dare you.
Jim wouldn’t take it the way you do. We used to say things in the 50’s that are no long said, either. Some things just wear out.
I told Obama worshipers off back in the day as well, but I used different phrases. It doesn’t matter. What matters is the personal insults dished out to Trump supporters by Cruz supporters just as bad as might be expected from Dems. What is going to happen when Trump wins? Are the Cruz supporters going to stay home?
Oh really? What difference does longevity on this site make? Does it make you any smarter? Does it make you correct in all things? The FReeper who brought me here was a member LONG before 2004.
Jim supports BOTH Trump and Cruz. He isn’t going around trashing Trump supporters and insulting them. He has better sense.
The NSA and other spook agencies can type your name in and bring up every site you ever visited that had to do with any religion; your emails, social media stuff you posted with any key words they choose like, church, faith, Jesus, Christ, Islam, Mohamed, sin, cross, jihad, whatever and determine what your beliefs are in less than a minute.... you, me and everyone else who ever used the net or a digital phone or filled out a govt form that has been transfered to a govt database. But that is not all they can do to find out all they need to know about you, but never mind all is hunky dory in your universe. I can find lots about you just with your birth name and birth date or SNN number or _______ .
Your Freeper signup comes up 2009 Noob.
Besides Mollypitcher1 is clearly smarter than you she likes Trump like Jim and me! LOL.
“The NSA and other spook agencies can type your name in and bring up every site you ever visited...”
Absolutely they can if they investigate someone, but there are over 300 million citizens in this country and they are not all being investigated to find their religion and put it on a list. (Since we have a family member who works in investigation at the NSA, he already knows we are Catholics and so is he.)
How many keystrokes do you think it takes for someone at NSA to bring up a list of every Pentecostal who owns a gun and visits FR? That is my point. They already have a registry of every Muslim in the country.
Go talk to Jim Rob himself, I been here since 2004.
