Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Rush is not always right..
They will accuse us of drinking to much of the “ Constitution “ koolaid.... Sarcasm
Ahhh, True Colors are showing, keep it up Trump supporters.
Rush is talking about this now. Cruz should know better than to accept some stupid reporter premise.Yes, have listened to so much bloviation which misses the point Trump said no such thing--the allegation goes to the reporter's agenda of playing round-robin gotcha--and an inattentive world's willingness to accept the premises of agenda-driven reporters.
The Trump YUUGIE koolaid has taken effect...
And have trown off any pretense...
Yeah, and so did Obama promise the koolaid drinkers a bunch of goodies in 2008 and 2012 to get elected, same thing with Trump.
Ohhhhh cry me a river.
You know very well that the Trump supporters do just exactly the same thing that you and other Trump supporters accuse us of doing.....
It’s called hypocrisy...
A lot of Trump supporters sound like they are from DU and Kos.
Nope, the Trump supporters got conned and took the bait.
They have taken the bait on many things its just they don’t know it yet.
They took the bait on supporting Donald Trump.
They are being setup....
Donald Trump is a con-man and is pulling their chains.
Remember in the movie Rocky Apollo Creed’s trainer tells Apollo Creed :
” He don’t know its a show, he thinks its a real fight “
Keep that in mind Trump supporters while you support Donald Trump, because its just a show.
At least Ted Cruz knows that this is a real fight.
Funny, E-verify is for forgieners, to keep track on “ Illegals...... Not American citizens or Christians.
Amen, Brother Freeper. It’s a dirty and thankless job reminding people you generally admire and respect of hard truths they’d rather not see about their favorite guy. But somebody’s got to do it. Folks like you and me are the Dirty Dozen of FR, I guess.
Now, now there, so typical of the Trump supporters to engage in personal insults.
Ohh, they are totally wide awake in their hypocrisy....
Look in the mirror Trump supporters.
When the Ted Cruz supporters get pushed, we will push back just as hard until this crap stops by the Trump supporters.
I agree. No matter how the media spends this, they always ignore his next paragraph. Trump was talking about illegals. He said so in the next paragraph. The misrepresentation intentional on their part.
As a matter of policy, until we get the entire visa/foreign tourist mess fixed, I would agree with tracking Muslim visas and tourists until the remainder of the system is fixed and we track EVERY visa/tourist. They are not US citizens and aren’t entitled to being trusted.
may I ask why you can’t “ stand Cruz”??
The press is going to try to divide and conquer. We canât let them!
